contrary to what seems to be popular beliefe, all 351s are small blocks. you just want to know if its a Cleveland or a Windsor ( both small blocks), regardless, an easy way to tell is Windsors have 6 bolts holding each valve cover on. Clevelands have 875 GMC C-15 factory 454, automatic, lowered

the water neck on a cleveland is on the block, on a windsor the water neck is on the intake manifold

351 cleveland
the 351 cleveland block actually belongs to the 335 engine class
clevelands have larger mains than the windsor

The 351 Cleveland Also has A thin pice of metal that covers the front of the engine. A windsor's front cover is about 1 1/2 inches thick.

Should he not be told that Clevelands are generally harder to find and more highly regarded than Windsors due to the better breathing heads on the Clevelands. This is the case to such an extent that some people go to a bit of trouble to build "Clevor" engines by putting Cleveland heads on the more common Windsor block, although a special intake manifold is required and there are some other small differences. If he has a Cleveland 351 he would like to know that he probably has a more desireable engine than if he had a Windsor. Maybe if I had been able to find a 351 Cleveland I might not have embarked on a buildup of a SBC, but they are scarce.

Don, your right, Clevelands are harder to come by, & if he has one it may be more valueable than a Windsor, & it use to be beneficial to put Cleveland heads on a Windsor for more power. The aftermarket for Windsors these days make the Windsor the better choice than a Cleveland, $ for $ the Windsor makes more power than a Cleveland....unless you happento already have a cahce of good Cleveland hardware...or get a real bargain75 GMC C-15 factory 454, automatic, lowered

I've had a cleveland laying in the garage for five years now.
I have mostly all the new parts to build it, I just keep runnin in to the same problem. The Height and Width won't fit my 73 mavrick/ 66 mustang/ now it won't fit in my 65 Ranchero with out spreading the shock towers out. So there are some set backs to it. I did'nt find parts to be that much more costly. Mostly because alot of the parts are interchangeable with the 351/400 modified
The Intake/ crank /rods won't interchange because the mods have taller decks, and differant size mains.

Vara, basically as far as cost I mean alot of perf. parts are more costly...not as much to choose from, especially when you get up into the 6500 RPM + teritory, not as much to choose from in pistons, rods, cam choices are more limited (unless you do a custom grind), intakes, & well heads for that matter, all this doesnt mean much if you already have everything...or arent building anything that requires some of these perf. items75 GMC C-15 factory 454, automatic, lowered

If You install wave loc rod bolts, then the rods are supposed to be good to 8,000.

cleveland
a cleveland also needs an eccentric cam to pump the fuel pump
which is mounted on the cam shaft face
pump protrudes through the right side of the block
ps to put a cleveland head on a windsor block
you have to fill the square passages in the head
and drill a 1/8 hole where the water passages on the intake are at. it is a small holle but you still get pressureLast edited by chevy-ford_man; 07-24-2004 at 10:14 PM.

It Looks like a small metal cup thats offset and bolts on to the front of the cam shaft. Or you could just use a electric fuel pump.
