Bling is good, looks really good! There is something about chrome or polished stainless that just makes the difference.

That chrome work is really tops. It would be nice if we had a shop close enough to get some pieces redone like the ones you are showing. That roadster pickup is going to be a show winner when Dan, gives it the final inspection.

Thanks guys. Yeah, seeing that stuff makes you want more and more of it dipped. I was very impressed with the work and the turnaround time. I could have ups'd the stuff to them but since they are only 150 miles from home I just tossed it in the car and drove it over and then went back to pick it up.

Dan still has a few more pieces to smooth out so we can get those done, like his door hinges, nerf bars, and stuff like that. If we keep moving along like we have been Turkey Run in November might actually be a reality for him this year.

I also picked up his top frame from the powder coater this morning. It looks pretty good too.

I was out in the garage yesterday and now wish I hadn't as I was picking something up off the floor right beside the left front wheel and noticed that the chrome on the brake callibers and steering rods have a pitted rusty look too them. Heck one would think the chrome would last longer then 2-3 years. I just finished what I was doing ,turned around and slammed the door closed and went back inside rather annoyed with the whole car.

looks good don as for the plating deal .i always made stuff out of alum or s steel then buff it keeps the plater out of my back pocket

Thanks guys. Sorry to hear about your chrome pitting Whiplash. Chrome these days isn't as good as the old days...........all the good stuff has been banned. I have a steering arm on my 27 that I had Advanced Plating do for me well over 20 years ago. They charged me $ 100, which I thought was outrageous, but that arm still looks like it was done just yesterday. I had some other work done a little later by a plater here in Florida, it was a lot cheaper, but some of it has held up and some started getting down to the copper.

I know what you mean about cost Pat. They charged me $ 300 to do the rollbar alone, but I guess that isn't really all that bad considering the size of it. Chrome plating is like cocaine for us car nuts. I can't get enough of it and seeing the stuff come back makes me want to get more and more of the parts on the car done. "Hi, my name is Don and I am a Chromaholic."

I'd recommend Gulf Plating in Wilton Manor Fl to any of our Florida guys. Clean operation, good prices, and the stuff looks so much better than the flash chrome we get on aftermarket parts we buy. He even came in under what he quoted us for cost.

Last year when I was freshening up my roadster for a trip, I noticed the chrome on my axle was looking really bad. It was dull and in some places I could see the copper on some of the edges. I pulled it out and along with some other pieces I took it back to the chrome plater. Now these pieces were 5 years old, so I wasn't complaining I just wanted to redo them.
When I got to the chrome shop my friend of 30 years look at them and he said, "you have been using chrome polish on your chrome." I said of course, doesn't everybody? The answer was No, don't ever use chrome polish on your chrome! He said when you get your chrome work done that is as shinny as it will ever get. If it gets dirty wash it with soap and water. When you use chrome polish it's abrasive and it takes the chrome off. Depending on how long they left it in the tank is how thick the chrome is. So when it's starts getting dull you are down to the nickel and then comes the copper.
So I don't use chrome polish on anything that is chromed.

Good to know about the polish Ken! I'm sure that led to the decline of the chrome bumpers of many of my vehicle!

I've wondered about that too Ken. What did your friend recommend for protection on it..........wax? I think as long as you use a pure carnuba wax with no cleaners in it (abrasives) that would be a good thing to do.

My first rollbar in the 27 was also chromed, but after a few years sitting in the sun and rain the top of it started having a coppery color in spots. I use the rollbar as a handle to pull myself into the car (no doors) and I wondered if the acids in my skin were hurting the surface too.

Yes, sorry I forgot that part. His recommendation is to treat it just like you would your paint.

Good info Ken, thanks for sharing that. I've also heard the same about using Wesleys Tire White on whitewalls. Some people say it dries out the white part and it starts to crack. I've been using sos pads on mine, not rubbing very hard, and that seems to work.

Thanks for the info Ken and Don and yes I'm guilty of using chrome polish on my chrome. Bother, bother and other swear words another mistake I have made. The other one was, because the car was only on it's shake down and not finished completely,we squirted some satin black on the body which I have proudly coated with wax etc thinking that I was helping the paint but have been told that was not what to do and I have just created a bigger job in prepping for the next paintjob.

Only just seen this Don and Kens absolutely spot on, chrome cleaner will just wear it away, I just use a good wax like Meguireirs.

Since this thread came back up I thought I would update on where we are. Yesterday Dan and I got the doors primed, and those are almost the last parts on the cab itself. It's nice not to have to worry about bare metal rusting any more........Dan has probably DA'd that cab 50 times in the couple years since we put it together.

The bed is next. He just has to make the openings a little wider where the axle tubes ride, then we can disassemble it and start priming that part. We took everyone's advice and have eliminated the etch primer step and are applying the DP90 right to bare metal. He DA'd it with 80 grit first and wiped it down a couple of times, and the primer seemed to grab on really well.

The clock is ticking as to whether he will make Turkey Run this November. The ONLY way that can happen is if he either puts the car together in primer or shoots a final coat of the Hot Rod Black I did on mine. I have been pushing him to simply get the d*** car on the road this year and enjoy it, then pull the body off next Spring and get it professionally sprayed. That would also allow him time to lick his financial wounds and recover a little in between. I think the fact this car has been absorbing so much money for the past 5 years is wearing on him as much as the physical work putting it together. It gets VERY old after a while, spending dollar after dollar and not seeing the end of the tunnel.

Nothing picture worthy this time, but pretty soon we should have some shots of the body hopefully going together.
