Don Looks good..... do you think you should put a stifiner across the bottom?? As it looks like you'll be putting the side bolts in shear with out it?? Shear in not out.

Thanks guys. No, it will be fine as is, Charlie. We considered puttiing an additional plate across the bottom but the plate is made of 3/8 thick steel.........we could have gone with quarter inch and it would have been strong enough.......it ain't moving.

If you have ever seen the Hurst mounts for the Olds engines they are WAY flimsier than this one. Those mounts are actually two mounts, one on each side, that are held in place by three bolts per side. Those mounts are putting all their load on the bolts, whereas this on is really supported by the two main bolts that go up under the timing cover. The two bolts per side are only there to give additional support and will be taking very little stress by comparison. And, they are 3/8 grade 8 bolts I put in those 4 bottom timing cover locations, and two 7/16 grade 8 bolts on the underside.

You guys are worried more about this one than I am !

Your going to break the trans thru the bellhousing bell area---you have much more stress in that area from the front mount on the engine plus the trans mount is so far to the rear--now add the engine torque stress into that picture---I won't hazard an estmate to how many miles, but it won't go far.

Have a nice time with it---

Don---it would be very easy for you guys to build support mounts off the adapter plate for the trans--you can even come off them higher up to the top of the frame so as not to use up any space under neath in the exhaust area

Mounts look great. Dan did a nice design job. The welds look beefy too.

I think it's time for me to close this build thread. I'm tired of this motor mount thing being beat to death. The fun out of posting about it has gone .

    See you guys around.

Don. I also hope you return to this! You and your sons are such an important piece of the jigsaw puzzle we call CHR! I'm thinking your experiencing the one thing we all worry about, criticism and thin skin, when you put yourself out there. You have always seemed to be immune to this phenom and I really hope you can shake this one off and continue this project. While I don't participate anywhere near the level you do! I hope you can re-gain the enthusiasm & excitement to continue this project. I always learn from you and the boys and enjoy your ability to share. Not to mention I'll miss the kitty's.....

Okay, this is my second try to post, first time it said I was no longer logged in,and what I typed disappeared. I hope you reconsider, your builds are fun to read about. If I may, might I suggest a way to bolster the torque converter area by bolting on the cover/shield from a chevy 4x4 ? In my feeble mind it seems that it should help by closing in that area, and you cold even polish it to look pretty! Hank

Different ideas are helpful sometimes. I know that you guys have steered me clear of many disasters and offered great support to this beginner(me). Sometimes, it seems the way people respond are more distructive than helpful, but by in large most posts are positive. Don you and Steve, Dave, Ken, and even Bob are the main reason I visit here. I know I have gotten carried away with the banter in the past, but have learned as I go. You are a real asset to this site, and will be sorely missed should you decide to stop posting, though I respect that too. It's been hard not seeing Ken's posts. I hope you reconsider.

Ok, where to start? First off, I would like to apologize to Jerry and everyone who was just trying to help with their suggestions and comments. You did nothing I haven't done a thousand times on here, so I should have taken it as just being helpful.

I guess what caught me the wrong way was that we had put in two 12 hour days figuring out the mount and then the subject of needing a center support wouldn't go away. I think I was tired, and also a bit childish.... ok, VERY childish....taking my ball and going home.

I actually had it in the back of my mind about that setup putting a lot of stress on the aluminum bellhousing area, because I remember reading about that years ago when Hurst mounts were being used alot. Something about them being ok with cast iron bellhousings but not aluminum. But I wanted to get further into the build before I thought about that aspect........I could always add the support at a later time.

I called Bob Bendtsen today, who makes the adapter I am using and he said some people don't use any support there, but it is highly recommended. He said some people modify the stock bellhousing mounts to work, and others fab up something off of the 3/4 inch thick adapter plate he includes with his kit.

I think what we will do is maybe weld some wings onto that plate and run some rubber bisquits, one per side, to support the back of the motor there. I looked at it last night, when I put the motor and transmission back into the car, and there is plenty of room to do that.

My Son Don said he saw my last post and said that sometimes written words come out different than what we intended on saying, and he is right. Again, I apologize to all the people who were just trying to be good friends, but who caught me on an off day. Please accept my apologies.

    Don

Glad you're back, Don. As far as the "tone" of your post, there were a couple of others that were a lot more abrasive than necessary. I would have "fired back" also if put in that position. If you received my personal e-mail you know what I'm talking about. Anyway, we're glad you're here.

As for the center support - It's probably a good idea, but I know of a couple of cars (a T-bucket and a C-Cab) that have been on the road since the late '70s with the Hurst style front mounts and tailshaft mounts on the trannys with no problems...
