Thanks, Jim and Whip, but when I screw up I don't mess around, I do it right. Jim, I didn't get your email, but thanks for the thought.

Dan just got home from work and I talked with him about the center mount, and he agrees it would be easy to fab up one to bolt onto either side of that 3/4 inch thick plate. We are going to look at it tonight, when we go to feed the strays.

Exchange rate isnt too bad,,has been better..Your sons can feed the strays...Sounds like you need a break..

Glad you are "back", Don. I figured you would be and that you just had had a bad day - and none of us have added patience to our virtues as we get a bit longer of tooth. That's one of the reasons I send my wife out to do battle on occasion - she's the trained professional mediator in the family.

NOW - on with the build

I guess what caught me the wrong way was that we had put in two 12 hour days figuring out the mount and then the subject of needing a center support wouldn't go away. I think I was tired, and also a bit childish.... ok, VERY childish....taking my ball and going home.

I actually had it in the back of my mind about that setup putting a lot of stress on the aluminum bellhousing area, because I remember reading about that years ago when Hurst mounts were being used alot. Something about them being ok with cast iron bellhousings but not aluminum. But I wanted to get further into the build before I thought about that aspect........I could always add the support at a later time.

I called Bob Bendtsen today, who makes the adapter I am using and he said some people don't use any support there, but it is highly recommended. He said some people modify the stock bellhousing mounts to work, and others fab up something off of the 3/4 inch thick adapter plate he includes with his kit.

I think what we will do is maybe weld some wings onto that plate and run some rubber bisquits, one per side, to support the back of the motor there. I looked at it last night, when I put the motor and transmission back into the car, and there is plenty of room to do that.

My Son Don said he saw my last post and said that sometimes written words come out different than what we intended on saying, and he is right. Again, I apologize to all the people who were just trying to be good friends, but who caught me on an off day. Please accept my apologies.

I'm glad you guys are a forgiving lot. Thanks for that.

Steve, you have GOT to start paying your shop help more money. The poor girl can't even afford a proper uniform, and has to ride a bike to work ! Uh, second thought, start paying her less !

Last night Dan and I went to the shop and looked over the center mount situation. After bolting everything up we found two tapped holes that Bendtsens put in the plate that must be there for the express purpose of bolting on some mounts there. We can find no other reason for them. That is good, so all we have to do is fab up two small Hurst type side mounts that bolt on there and extend out to the frame rails on either side. We can use a second set of earlly Ford bisquit mounts, and in essence the motor will be hung in a cradle of sorts, and the transmission center mount will be just icing on the cake and there to support only the transmission.

What we will end up with will be kinda like a front engine and mid engine plate setup, except it will have rubber bisquits on all four corners. Dan doesn't like just those two holes in the adapter plate holding all the stress, so he is convinced we need to tap one more hole into the plate where I have the little red dot in the picture below. I think two holes are plenty, but overkill never hurts.

We put the torque convertor on last night and bolted the transmission back on to make sure any mount we make won't interfere with anything, but there is plenty of clearance at those two spots. That will be our project Friday, and maybe making the tranny crossmember too. What is not shown in the picture below is the cast aluminum starter switchover housing that bolts up tight there and encloses everything. It also gives some strength to the bottom of the adapter. The original one was cast iron, but I have an aluminum aftermarket one that moves the starter to the right side for steering box clearance.

Don it looking good. I put some center mounts on mine, I thought the TH350 bell housing was kinda thin. But I did have a 55 Chevy about 35 years ago with a 396 and muncie, aluminum bell housing and no center mounts. Drove the mess outa it and never a problem. Of course young and dumb sometimes you get away with something and didn't even know it..... The way I drive now, that center mount will do nothing except give me some peace of mind.
