I can tell you this about unleaded in old Mopar Flatheads.
First, it's almost impossible to kill them.
My brother owned a stock 39 Plymouth a few years back and for 2 yrs it was his daily driver.
He averaged at least 150-200miles a day in it.
Drove it at highway speeds 65-70mph to & from work(100 miles round trip)
The ONLY problem he ever had with it was in the summer when the temps were in the high 90's.
The carb would boil over when he would turn the mtr off because of how hot it was(85-90*plus).
A thick carb spacer seemed to fix the problem.....joeLast edited by TooMany2count; 11-29-2011 at 11:25 AM. Reason: added info

Either we are alone in the Universe or we are not.
Both are equally terrifying.

I read some stuff about the Mopar flat six; they made that same basic engine from the 1930's up into the late 1960's in everything from cars, trucks, military vehicles, and industrial applications like pumps and generators. If you're a Walton's fan; I think you can see one running John Walton's sawmill on some episodes. On the P15/D24 forum there's several guys who bought vehicles with these motors that were siezed and after they got them broke loose, they kept on running them as is.
Dave, sounds like you have a Christmas present you're wanting to send me! OK, if that old Hemi is taking up too much garage space I guess I'll let you give it too me. What're friends for?

We took our first road trip; just down the street and back a few times. It runs good and drives solid, just need to bleed the brakes some more and I'm still having carb issues. I'm thinking of going to a Holley 350 or 500 two barrel. I saw another old Mopar flathead with a Holley 500 and the guy was really happy with it.
I started patching the hood; big rust holes on both sides by the hinges and in the front. I got all the patches welded in yesterday; should be able to finish it and put it on today.

Ditto what Dave said. My last attempt this fall on patching some rust holes on my hood ended with lots of extra little holes needing patching! Welding sheetmetal is an art form! Heck body work is too!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

You're not kidding; I've did a lot of grinding and re-welding to get it decent looking. Still need to sand my filler on the back side of the hood but it's back on the car and it's solid so that's good. Other than that I need to mount the bumpers, put the door panels back on, get my carb issue straights, put the heater box back in and I guess that's pretty much it. Maybe put in some tunes, too. Not bad for four months and about $1800 including the price of the car. I'm going to drive the wheels off this dog.Last edited by falconvan; 12-11-2011 at 06:28 PM.

You zipped right along with this project, glad to see you finally got to take her around the block. I bet it will be a dependable driver and get good gas milage too.

Yeah, it should. It's only a 218 so how much fuel can it burn? I ditched the Carter and put on a Holley 350 with an adapter plate. Runs like a champ now.
Thank you Roger. .
