    51 Moredoor

     



    I found this on the local CL and couldnt say no; 51 Plymouth Cambridge with a great solid body and decent paint. It had been in a garage the last 15 years and preserved nicely. It needs some floor work and interior but overall it's in great shape. I think Im going to change directions on the 49 and swith all my parts over to this one. I had gathered up parts to do a 5-speed conversion and four wheel disc brakes so that'll all go on here.

    So the plans for the 49........BIG V8 (actually one of the early Dodge Red Rams would probably fit without too much work )?
    I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

    No, it seems I really can't! But yeah, I think it"s a better start than my 49. Putting the two together and selling the leftovers should make a fairly nice looking driver with less invested than if I just kept going on the first one. I can live with the paint the way it is for a while; it should buff out OK.

    I guess the whole spotlight thing was a common custom touch back then. This one is a dummy; no inside mechanisms on it. I like the dual rear antennas and the lower stance, too.

    After I get all the parts off of it I want, who knows? Might part the whole thing out or just sell as an unfinished project. There wont be a whole lot left!

    5-6 years ago I passed on 2 cars a '50 and a '51 Plymouth. The '51 ran, '50 didn't have a complete engine but both were very solid restorable 4dr's. $1,200 for the pair but I had just gotten my '51 Chevy

    Wow, that was a good price! I've really gotten attached to these old Mopars over the past several years. I've had a 47, two 48s, a 49, a 50, and now a 51. I told my wife I needed a 46 to continue the post-war Mopar cycle; she's not taking the bait, though. I just pulled all the seats and old carpet out this past weekend. It'll need some floor pan work and I went ahead and ordered a set of new rockers.That, one patch in the trunk and she'll be good to go on the body for a while.

    Time for the tear down! Im really happy with how solid this thing is. All the fenderwells and hidden spots where my green car is rusted look great on here. Most of the factory undercoating is even still there. I pulled apart everything under the hood and got the motor ready to pull. Also pulled all the shift, accelerator, and clutch linkage, driveshaft and trans, all the exhaust and the fuel tank. My replacement rockers came in and I decided to go ahead and make the tunnel cover removeable like the earlier models to ease in the five speed swap. Floors and rockers are the worst spots but it shouldnt be too bad to fix. Im just going to use flat 16ga like I did on the other car.

    Kewl deal!!! From what's pictured the sheet metal appears to be in great shape, heck of a find! Should make for a really fun cruizer!

    I made a killer Craigslist score tonight; a complete 54 Plymouth Savoy dash for $50! The original dash looks really rough so this should be a big improvement; I like the styling much better.
