Project car build thread poll
Sunday I started a new project with my 9 1/2 year old grandson. We started on a scratch built coaster car for him and his brother and sister. We are basically building a downsized T Bucket that at some point might be motorized.
I was thinking about posting a short build thread on the project here but I'm not really sure if it's an appropriate forum to do that on. SOOOO basically I'm just looking for input from the members to see if they would object to me doing so.

Heck Mike, post it!! Projects like that rock, and might even push me toward something similar for my bunch of grandsons! Seems I saw something in the past were a guy used a deep wheelbarrow as a mini T-bucket body?Roger

Mike - go for it. Might just encourage others of us to do the same with their kids and GC. I just wish my GC were closer and visited more often so I could do it as well. These two live in San Antonio and are here on their annual trip and just in the past hour had a ride:

Go for it but please don't be upset if we all start copying your plans so don't go placing a patent on it yet.
I maybe a little crazy but it stops me going insane.

Be very careful about the detail you post, Mike. Next Whip will be asking if you had your plans reviewed by some local safety board, or if OSHA has authority over coaster cars in the US?? Tries to make it seem that it just harmless chatter, but the jury's still out.... Heaven help you if you put a motor on it - he'll be asking if you had your powerplant reviewed by the EPA and the local DMV!!Roger

Do it Mike!
I erased what I had originally typed as I stirred up a hornets nest once and didn't enjoy the hot seat! But we really do love projects no matter what the size!
Lots of pic too okay? 8-)

Thanks for the positive responses guys.
Jerry I think I would pass on the ride on that scooter (but after a couple of beers who knows LOL).
Roger, I saw the wheelbarrow thing too, which is what got the gears turning. I had mentioned to my daughter (the kids mom) a few months ago that I had found out they were still making new pedal cars, but it was a shame are so small that the 2 oldest ones have already pretty much gotten too big for one. I’m hoping for the kids to be able to enjoy this for quite a while.
Ryan, I have not heard the term “Tot Rod” before....that is likely to find it’s way onto the car.
I’ll probably kick the thread off this coming Sunday or Monday when we have a bit more progress made. This is the mob I’m building this with/for. Of course my oldest Grandson is the most excited about it, both the build and the expectation of having it completed. When my Granddaughter was asked if she wanted to help too she said “I’ll drive it”. The little one just likes looking at the shiny tools.
So far we have a plan, some rough drawings, a few measurements and some raw materials. I wish the wheelbarrow was a bit deeper, but I think we can make it work. I have explained to Cade that that is NOT patina, that is rust and cars come out of Grandpa’s shop with shiny paint.
I picked this old Power Products 1000 a few years ago when Cade was just a tot figuring it would be a good someday project to start learning engine basics ......well he’s definitely shown an interest so it looks like someday might be here.
I’ll fill in the details when I start the build thread.Last edited by Mike P; 07-17-2012 at 08:07 PM.

Hey Mike, last year I saw a "Tot Rod" made from a wheel barrow that resembled a 27T roadster and that is where I got my idea from. I purchased some go kart tires and a new wheel barrow tub, but that's all the farther I've gotten.

Go for it. It'll give me a reson to get started on my grandsons jeep. They are a hoot. He turned 3 a few months ago, and the other day he was out in the garage with me, asked to borrow my glasses, put them on, layed on his back and got under his tricycle. And why is the camera always too far away. We will be watching for the build with anticipation.

"....It'll give me a reson to get started on my grandsons jeep......"
You know I hadn't even thought of a jeep. On the surface anyway that would be a pretty simple body to build.
It also sounds like like I'm not the only Grandpa who had been planning this.
Kind of along the same lines, here is one of my favorite commercials I pull up and look at every once in a while.

Looks like you've gotten a go from close to half the active members, the rest probably haven't seen this yet.................so looks like a go to me.
That fan shroud has a very nice shape to it, hope you can incorporate that into the final design..............I think I can already see some swoopy pinstriping on it. Wrap that fuel tank in some brushed aluminum with a couple appropriately shaped end caps and it's a Moon tank!Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon
It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.

Darn it Bob I can picture that I could use something like the skiny boat trailer tires and build moon discs for them
Unfortunatly we're kind of comitted to a different direction on this one. On the other hand my youngest grandson may pick up the bug too and it will give me enough time to keep an eye out for parts!!!!!!
