I used a starter/generator from a gas golf cart. It is a belt drive to the rear axle yoke. I originally went this route because there was not enough room for a traditional alternator (to keep the battery charged) and the starter/gen would serve to charge and reverse. After the install I ran across a nice mini alternator that fit the tight confines, and am now using it. I have not wired up the start/gen yet, but have used a similar setup in the past and it worked well enough. I may keep the starter/gen but will likely ultimately switch to an automotive mini starter with a small flywheel on the axle for a more positive engagement. I have seen this setup on bike powered mini coopers and it seems to work well.
