John Deere Repaint
Not really the right thing for this forum but I think It'll still fit in somehow. We got this tractor in at work and it was kind of a basket case. It would randomly stop moving and two other dealers couldn't figure it out other than it was a wiring problem. It was bought by a tractor jockey we work with and he dropped it off, however we didn't know the interior was completely torn apart and every wire harness was yanked out and hacked up and spliced all over. It honestly looked like a tangled up wad of kite string in the cab. I gave up on the harness it came with rather quickly and we ordered a new $4000 harness for it and to my amazement it went in pretty well and after fighting a few electronic glitches, everything worked great. For the cosmetic part of it I put on a new hood and side panels because the old ones somehow got destroyed during the trucking process, and I also replaced one rusted out rear fender. We made the decision to repaint the rest of the green and repaint the wheels instead of trying to shine up the remaining bad paint. Now I have another project after work but it's kind of nice to make money instead of spend it for once.Seth

That looks great Seth. Plus, it's not too late to add some flames or chrome wheels!
I love your shop too. That thing would barely fit in my driveway.
I grew up on a small farm. I spent many hours behind a bailer and a John Deere 60.Steve

I have often been tempted to pick up a couple of gallons when at their store. I personally love the yellow and green

Thanks guys, but I haven't started painting anything yet. The hood and the fender you see are nice and shiny because those are the new parts. It's the rest of it I have to paint, I should have taken a picture of that instead but it's not real noticeable on pictures. I got one frame rail ready last night, and I will need to pull the wheels off in the sand blast them.Seth

I thought the wheels looked dull but that side of the plastic looked pretty darn nice. You see a lot of them that don't get taken care of and they are all faded and cloudy looking.Ryan

Lol, I hear ya ! I was raised on John Deere's, worked on IH, Case IH and New Holland for about 15 years, now I work on all colors. I've come to the point in my life that I don't care what it is as long as it's not a POS It's not on so much of a time limit but I would like to get it done in about a month or quicker, the end of the year is when farmers buy stuff.Seth

I know what you mean, today you have to work on whatever comes in the door. Around here tractors have become such a rarity you can no longer earn a living working on nothing but tractors. Most of what shows up on my shop doorstep is pure crap! And no one has any money to pay for it so I haven't taken on a tractor overhaul in 5 or 6 years! Maybe more?
Good Luck on the project. Maybe you'll share the ride with us? hint hint hint lol.

We like tractors too!
If it's old and loud, post it!.
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

Finally had some time to post an update. I got the main frame and front axle sanded up and sandblasted the rear of the tractor. I got one shot of what most of the tractor looks like, plastic parts looking like this and an old repaint job flaking off in other spots. I got the main frame painted and FYI if you've never masked off a tractor, it's one of the worst jobs ever, what a pain!Seth

I got two coats of paint on and for the third time in a row my air compressor died while painting. It wouldn't have been the end of the world but the last time my compressor quit I tried starting my gas one the pull rope pulled out of the engine. I wish I would have not put that on my fix it later list. I had to go to plan C and that was run to work and grab our service pickup and use that air compressor. I decided 3 times is enough and bought a new compressor today from Fleet Farm. They had a 17 cfm Sanborn advertised for $1,300 and had it on hand, but then I seen Menards had the same one on sale for $990 but had to order it. Being the Dutch person I am, I called FF about it and they said they would match the Menards price. When I went to pick it up I got another 10% off for "applying " for their credit card so in the end I got it for $915. This thing should kick the butt out of my 20 yr old, 11 cfm Sanborn that it's replacing, maybe I can sandblast without stopping now The plan after painting the frame is to take the remaining plastic pieces off the tractor and paint them and the one old fender and the steps. After that, I'll sandblast the wheels and paint them.Last edited by 53 Chevy5; 11-25-2018 at 08:17 PM.

Sorry to hear about your compressor luck Seth! At least you were able to get the work truck to finish it off. Yes, masking a tractor is no darn fun! I've been involved with painting a few large ones and that's a lot of prep work and more masking work.
It's looking really nice though. I don't blame you for getting them to price match. They advertise they do so why not call them out on it. Think about the many people who do not.

Looks good Seth. Tractors are a pile of work to paint, and all those different surfaces, not like a car with 6 or 7 surfaces , and then the hoses, pistons etc...
You've made good progress, and now with a new compressor, you shouldn't have to worry about that problem for a long time!

got a few more pieces prepped and painted today. Everything went real good till I seen that I had quite a bit of paint left in the gun and decided to give it more more unnecessary coat, of course now I have a run in the fender. I can't blame it on anything but me and my impatience to wait for paint to dry enough before the next coat. I got to do the roof, some side panels and a few misc things and then it's off to the yellow.Seth
