Yeah, she looks pretty abused in those pics. In that one pic of the shiny radiator.. what kind of battery terminal is that? Is that a hose clamp I see there!?!?!?

Brakes suck! I finally got good brakes on my 72 Scout but it was a battle. It started off with only the right front brake working, I bled everything and things were better but not good. I pulled all the drums off and inspected the wheel cylinders and found all but the one working had one piston that was stuck. I put all new cylinders on and new drums and brakes on the rear ( they were grooved up and too thin to get turned again ) and I ordered new brakes for the front just because everything else is new. I tried putting the new shoes on the front but the ones I was given were 2 1/4 wide and mine measured two inches wide. Fine, I'll put the old ones back in, they looked good anyhow. I tried bleeding the brakes, boom, the master cylinder blows, crap. Put a new master cylinder on and everything bleeds except the front passenger side. I investigated it and found the brake hose collapsed, so I put on new front brake hoses, time to bleed brakes. Boom rear steel line leaking everywhere because it was apparently nearly rubbed through before and now it got mad at me for disturbing it while putting on the wheel cylinder. I replaced the rear line, bleed everything adjusted the brakes and took it for a spin. Now it pulls to the right. I tried adjusting the shoes but it would not change so I called the parts store and asked him to order me new front shoes but my shoes measure 2 inches not 2 1/4. He called me back later and said the only ones that used a 2 inch shoe were the 71 scout, well mine are 2 inch so we might as well order them. I got the shoes and the driver's side was fine, I took the passenger side off and noticed the shoe was 2 1/4 on that side🙄. So someone did some part swapping at one time and that was the final reason it was pulling to the right, it had a bigger brake. Long story but I now have, 2 inch 71 Scout shoes on the front, nearly everything is new and it finally stops good 😄Seth

You would definitely need a disposable income if you had to pay somebody .I've started keeping track of the money I put into my projects, I don't know if I dare keep track of time lolSeth

Wow isn't it fun to chase the rabbit on the fix it end. Great work. I got to drive a Scout in the Florida Keys, that the place I worked used for dump runs. The floor panels were completely rusted out in places, so that you could use your feet like Fred Flintstone to slow down if you wanted too. Incredibly, with all the body rust it was a work horse that was a blast to drive. Always liked the Scouts!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

I took a little while and got caught up on this thread. Great project! Those old IH engines are tough as nails, but weigh a ton. Still, nice that you kept the old girl complete.Mike

I thought I'd give an update on the Scout. I've been daily driving it on and off for awhile now, just about 600 miles worth and it keeps running fine. I keep making things a little better on it, like door weather striping to keep some of the dust out, I put a floor mat in it and a radio. I got all the gauges working and cleaned up some crappy wiring. It's not shiny but it sure is fun to drive and it sure gets some looks, their getting used to seeing me at the gas station For those of you who have not seen this pic on FB I thought I would share it, my boss took it because he wasn't able to go with us.

"....... dinner ( lunch for you non Midwest people ) ....."
Thank you Seth. I married a non Midwesterner. You'd think after over 20 years she'd give up trying to make me say lunch.

There is certainly something to be said for leaving it looking rough. You're not going to be afraid to pile in and have fun and not worry about scratching it. If you actually use a truck for 4 wheeling it's going to get scratched, pretty paint makes that no fun at all. Not a fan of rat rods but in this case a mechanically new drivetrain and a rough exterior makes perfect sense.

I've always had a vision in mind when I buy something, but I honestly don't know what to do with this thing. I don't know if it's going to get a full LS swap someday or if the body will get redone someday or both, I really don't know. I have a couple other projects to finish before I'll do anything if anything lol.Seth

Being from the deep south I know all about the dinner thing. The evening meal is supper. But most folks in this neck of the woods don't say pop, Coke is the most often heard term for a soda no matter what the brand is. Coke was first bottled less than 100 miles from where I live and I guess it just became the generic word. FWIW - I'm a Coke drinker, can't really enjoy a Pepsi. No, they don't taste the same. Now, if you want something really good, you get an RC cola in a glass bottle. Wouldn't hurt to have a Moon Pie to go with it. Yep, that is actually a thing from my childhood.Last edited by Hotrod46; 08-07-2023 at 06:54 AM.
