My father worked for General Telephone in Southern California in the fifties and up through 1966(?). He was responsible for central offices in Crestline and Lake Arrowhead and GTE issued him a brand new International Scout 800 with a turbocharged four cylinder. It was pretty basic but I remember that it had electric windshield wipers, a heater, and GTE installed seat belts! It had military style tires and it really did pretty well in the snow. Gutless as far as speed, but never had an issue riding up and over some pretty deep snow. GTE also had International upgrade the electrical to include a huge battery and an alternator as the Johnson Messenger II radio were still tube based and required lots of power. It was recommended to leave the Scout idling at short stops to allow radio operation and dad left her running when he filled up at Marty’s 76 station!

Neat little rig – so cool you found one and are keeping it alive!

That's a great story about your dad's. I didn't know they offered a turbo on them, that's pretty awesome! I've heard the early Scouts were no power house, but they were the first on the market.

The Scout was developed to compete with the Jeep CJ, which was pretty much all alone as a rugged off-road capable vehicle. When IH brought out the Scout, Jeep updated to the CJ-5 in '64 and produced them in a bunch of formats until '87 when the YJ took over. Ford jumped in with the original Bronco in '66 and built them to '96.
Jeep was the lone rugged off-road vehicle for a long time, but then IH brought the Scout, Ford followed with the Bronco and Chevy with the Blazer. Yours is a piece of the early history!!!

Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.

Oh yeah, how could I forget about the Jeep , they were definitely the first. It is kind of cool driving something that has an IH emblem on it. When I bought it I thought for sure sometime I would put a complete 4.8 or 5.3 4x4 drivetrain in it, but this thing runs like a sewing machine it's kind of cool when you pop the hood to see international on the valve covers. It probably cost me 10 miles to the gallon and 100hp vs the 5.3 but it's cool lol.
