If it's just an engine stand, the answer is no. You need a stand bolted to the floor, supporting the engine at the motor mounts and at the rear. YOu also need to have the flywheel attached, water supply, cooling, gas supply and wiring.
If this motor doesn't have a roller cam, you'd need a really good stand, because you need to run the engine at 2500 rpm or so for 20 - 30 minutes to break in the cam.Jack

There's a lot of difference between a run in stand and an engine stand as Jack said. Along with the things Jack mentioned, you're also going to need a good fan to push air through the radiator, and some sort of muffler attached to the headers so you can listen for nasty noises...Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Fire a BBC on an engine stand, and the engine stand is going to rotate around the motor. You don't want to try to violate Newton's third law. You'll get more than a ticket.Jack

Reminds me of a neighbor kid and a couple of his buddies a few years ago. His dad had pulled a complete sbc and left if laying on the ground. The kid and his buddies hooked a battery up and an ignition switch and poured some gas down the carb. It took awhile, but it did finally fire for a few seconds and watching those kids scramble was priceless. Just wish I'd had a camera.Ken Thomas

My cousin and I fired up a Dodge flathead six sitting on the ground,it idled fine, but he snapped the throttle open and the thing went rolling across the ground. Just lucky it went away from us! We were like 10 or 12 years old, not too bright.

Sandbags won't hold it. Are you perpared to run it for 30 minutes or so to break it in? If not, you may wipe the cam.Jack

They disabled the comments on this video because of me.
I put as a comment, what a great way to learn unsafe shop methods and endanger everyone around the engine
I also put that this is a sorry excuse for a engine teacher and these kids will have bad habits that will be hard to get rid of and that I could not believe this was a credited class taught at schools. This type of thing at a school is unacceptable and should not be tolerated.
I understand if stroker Mcgurk wants to fire the motor up like that ,not a accredited school shop teacher.........
This is big accredited engine school................sad stuff here .I cant even begin to list all the no no s here........I bet the exaust is real good in a enclosed shop enviroment.....Last edited by shawnlee28; 08-12-2007 at 09:11 AM.
