Ready for this?
Alright guys/gals, a real curve ball of a question here. 2-stroke engines! and their funky ignitions! lol i love the 2-stroke.
a past project of mine had a coil of the likes i have never seen. its not a magneto due to lack of points, condensor, and all that great stuff. not a traditional coil either.
i think it is a sator charge coil but not 100% on that one.
the coil sits about 1mm above the flywheel.
i have attached pics...
so what in the name of all things sacred is this thing?
Thanks,

2stokes
I sell concrete saws among other things. each manufacturer calls it something else..ignition module or magneto or coil.

What type of coil is it? Is it a standard igntion coil? Charging Stator Coil? I know its not a "pick-up or pulse coil" nor is it a Ignition Source Coil. the flywheel has magnets on it that charge and tell it when to fire i believe.

It's a similar motor to our model air plane motors. The ever popular Zenoah G-62 3.7 cu in uses a magneto. Does not have points or condenser. Looks almost exactly like the 1st picture. Very Very reliable. I ran mine for 13 years in a giant scale Corsair and never had a single problem with it. I still have the motor and I'm building another Corsair that hopefully will last untill I can't fly it any more. haha
You are right about the magnets in the flywheel. The timing is fixed at about 28 deg. Some are a bit less. You have to use a very "smart" flip of the prop to start these. 22-24 inch dia props. Kinda picture laying your lawn more over on it's side and hand starting it. haha You have to flip the prop over at 400 rpm to make the spark work right. We use a welding glove and sort of slap it. Usually 3 flips and it runs. one to choke it, one will get a "pop' unchoke and one to start. Works almost every time.
There are battery operated after market ignition systems for these and other "gas" motors. All are at least one step below the magneto systems as far as reliability. Battery, contol box, pick up, wiring, switch etc more stuff to fail. In some motors the CD idnition is all that is available. They are a bit lighter weight. And they start much easier as they have a built in advance/retard. They usually start at 5 deg BTDC and have electronic advance to 28 deg or so. Some you can manually preset the total advance but I have forund 28 deg works almost universally.Last edited by bentwings; 10-14-2007 at 12:03 AM.

They come in sizes, and type of ignitions. here just some of the different types I have, been playing with them since the early 60's
Bentwings, I always thought Corsair, now I know why you call yourself that! I have 3 of them, Where do you fly? I fly out of Rosemont (been awhile) 3M field in cottage grove, and we started the Sodbusters (hwy 94 & Co Rd 15) At one time we flew a 16' 8" wing span B36 in shows, I had a 12' B25

Thanks alot for the informative reply bentwings! My uncle flies RC planes not the giant scale though. Luckily my t-maxx has a glo engine so I don't need to worry about timing lol, fuel blows when it wants to!
Thanks for the COOL pics HemiTCoupe!
Sorry about the late reply, I was out of town.

I'd call it a simple magneto. The magnet induces a voltage in the coil each time it passes the core, and if the pigtail, which goes to a grounding contact on the throttle linkage is not grounded, the plug will fire. When the throttlt is pulled to full closed, the contact will close and ground the coil, preventing the plug from firing. I used to set them with a doubled business card between the core and the flywheel magnet.

good info bentwings
I'm trying to start our Zenoah G38
wore out two friend holding our 12ft wingspan camera carrier
while I flipped the prop
I'm waiting for the spring starter --our electric starter just doesn't have the jam to spin the brand new motor

HemiT....cool plane and motor display. Is that twin with the yellow mouth a Tartan?? I see a G-38 there too.
It a small world. I flew at Tri Valley years ago in the 70's and 80's. If you were around then I flew a pair of big pattern twins. Orange and white. Plus a handfull of Dirty Birdy's and Arrows. Made my own fuel hi nitro stuff haha. I blew up motors like top fuel guys. I was quite an outlaw at the time. I was also a member of 3M when they had the field out by Cimmeron next to the golf course. I also flew a few times at Sodbusters in the early days. We may have crossed paths.
I moved south and flew the Corsair all over down south. I have a 2 inch thick log book of every flight. I gave it to my son to fly up here which he did. Got an offer to sell it I couldn't turn down.
I'm back (look out and just an older outlaw) and my son and I are building a 118" B-25. I'm going to finish the new scale exhaust on the Ziroli P-51 with 5.8 Precision Eagle. We are laying out new Corsair too. It's going to be a big building season this winter.
tow'd A little tip I got when I first got the Zenoah. I flipped that prop untill I was blue. I called a buddy and he said you have to kinda slap it like you were mad at it. Oh boy I was ready for that!!! I went back outside and slapped that thing about twice and it was running. From then on it's me and Zenoah. I say "listen you....I'm the master here and don't you forget it. And by the way just to remind you here is a good slap." Viola it runs every time. It's man vs. machine you just gotta show it who is the master. haha41 Willys 350 sbc 6-71 blower t350, 9in, 4 link

Good stuff Bentwings
I'll get serious and slap the $#!T out of it this weekend
I've got the prop set so that the magnets are just before the pickup like it said in the instructions that came with the new motor
I've got the plane tied with rope to my rotissere in the shop hope the G-38
doesn't have the torque to pull it out

You gotta set the prop just like the instructions. I think it works out to 1 and 7 o'clock. Kinda awkward but if you slap down and thru you get a lot of velocity (rpm) out of the slap. I think it takes about 400 rpm to generate enough spark for these Zenoahs.
Excellent idea for the tie out. I always use one. Don't trust a helper....they can crush things easily and will panic if something goes wrong. Most fields here require them (tie outs).
The G-38 can probably pull up to 18-20 pounds so be careful. I use a nylon 1 inch wide horse lunge that I used to use for dog training.. I think it is rated at about 1000 pounds. 20 footer.
If you really want an electric starter this place makes one with real "Zoot".

Here's another motor type for ya, A Wankel rotary, I have 3, two are on a Royal B-25
The jumper has no motor
The Cap 21 had a 2.6 (odd ball motor) at the 3M field
Spare wankel and new rotor & cylinder
My Fokker DVII with a G-38, 6' wingspan at Tri Valley field
My Weeks Special with a G-62 and 24 oz fuel tank & 24oz smoke tank gas last most the day, smoke last 5 mins. 6' wing span at a Sodbusters show.
Bentwings-you asked if it was a Tartan, yes, I have a Laser it's going in.
I have over 150 different motor's, 38 new kits, I have no idea how may servo's I have (couple hundred), I have no idea how many planes I have, started & finished, I have tiny planes .010 to 14ft wing span B-25 , I have a scale ducted fan F-86. I almost have a hobby store in my basement, but everything is packed in box's, so I can move to Tn as soon as my house sells!
I use to build and fly with Scott Russelle, you must have heard of him around, I would bet he's the best around!

HemiTCoupe those pics of the Wankel are awesome! I love those rotarys, they just ask to be punished essentially haha! My dad had a twin turbo Mazda RX7 (dual rotors). That thing went like stink when those turbos wound up!
These little RC engines are cool aren't they?
Can be a little picky on air/fuel ratios though haha.
