I found a 402 BB with a TH400 from a 1971 pick up with low miles . It was on the Craigs list for $1200 But the guy came down to $1000 . I was thinking of buying it but I passed on it . It's gone now

I built some 396/402 BB Chevy street engines . The last one went into a 1967 Camaro SS . The car was a stock 396 car . And the guy wanted the engine to look stock . I used the stock manifolds but did a little pocket porting and install a larger camshaft . That car real ran strong . If it was mine I would install a high rise with a 750 Holley and a set of headers . I did install a 2400 hole shot converter . And the last thing would be a 373 gear the car had a 331 posi rear .

The last 402 bare block which was my core with splayed caps and ARP bolts went out the door for $965.

The 1971 402 that came out of the pick up truck . Is It the same block like the cars used ? Are the 427/454 HD truck engines the only tall block BB Chevy engines ? A guy had a 1974 Suburban with a 454 . It was the tall block . He said I could have it . I know that they can be built up . But the intake and push rods and what other parts are not the same ?Last edited by tango; 01-20-2008 at 07:27 PM.

I don't know of any tall deck 454 blocks.
Yes,the intake,push rods are longer.
The block it's self is .400 taller or 10.20 tall vs. the 396,402,427,454 or 9.80 tall.
I have built a bunch of the "poor mans" stroker big block Chevy with the tall deck block.
A sonic test is needed.
Bore 4.350 X stroke 4.500.
These make a 535.

I got one of their 500hp 454's. 60 over with Merlin oval port heads. Balanced and blue printed. 5 years ago, it was around $4K. Now I noticed it was $5600.
