Stay away from mid range cartridges like the 5.56 and 7.62 unless you're just playing around with prairie dogs or similar small game.Jack

I like the Pig, but only if there's a big guy to carry ammo.

My aunt gave me my late Uncles' Grandfathers gun. It's a pump action winchester 22. Haven't had a chance to fire it yet. I like to shoot my 7.62 x 54 cal Mosin Nagant Finnish rifle. It's dead nuts acurrate, cheap to fire, but has a hell of a kick. I'm good for 4 shoots before I start to twitch anticipating the recoil. For hand gun the goverment colt shoots well for me. I ran into an old timmer who was running a competition course with his Glock 9mm. He kept hitting slightly off to the lower left when he shot. The instructor looked at his hands, gave him a colt 45 to rerun the course. He beat everyone there that day. Turns out his hands are too big for the light small glock, but worked great with the wider grip heavier colt. I learned a lesson from him, went to a range with a buddy with lots of hand guns, and the colt commander was great! With my old Berreta 9mm, I was a losy shot. I went to buy a colt commander only to find out the aren't sold in Ca as new guns, haven't been drop tested so they are illegal. You can buy a used one, but hard to find, so I got the new Government Colt, and wow! Shoots great, not me, it ! It's like being a natural when you find the right weapon!
Sorry for the life story, here is a pic of the Winchester 1909 22. I just love the look of it!

I even had my own Daisy BB gun when I was 8, and I didn't shot mine or any one else's eye out!!!

ive always like marlins pre 40's bolt action .22's ive shot a few and they are stout accurate guns. fun for varmits to for me nothing feels like an old millitary rifle. i mean my 1917 is 91 years old. i always like stuff like that because it has a soul to bad it couldnt talk huh? my buddy just picked up a 1910 mauser pistol so thats the new conversation piece ha. as far as handguns go im looking into a .45 either springfield or rock island. i am a nostalgia when it comes to pretty much anything except bell bottoms!?

Game hunting I use my Parker-Hale Mauser in .308 Norma magnum, Nothing that lives on Earth can stand up to a well-placed round from one of those. Varmints get a dose of .222 from a Savage O/U, with a 20 Guage barrel underneath for backup. Also have a 1914 Enfield in .303 Brit, and a Lee-Enfield cut down to carbine size for packing in the bush.

Stovens. Thats a model 62 Winchester. They are a very accurate .22 cal. Hang onto it they are collectors items. I've got an old model 61 myself.
Hard to beat the Remington Model 700 in .270 or 7mm mag to reach out there and touch something. No macho grande crap just a good affordable shooter.

I use a Model 336 Marlin 30:30 with a 1 1/2 - 4 scope, 24" barrel and pistol grip stock. A nice quick handling gun, accurate enough for the ranges I hunt and lots strong enough for whitetail deer and black bear. I have been using 150 grain ammo.

For hunting in North America, I am partial to the 30.06. I have a Springfield Model 1903 that was customized by my Dad back in the 60's. I added a Redfield 3x9 scope and got a beautiful Buck out in Arizona a few years ago. Lot's of folks like the .270 over 30.06 for flatter long shots. But I feel the .06 will shoot long with a lighter grain bullet for Antelope. Ammo is always readily available anywhere!
I have a Marlin 30.30 I keep at my Cousin's home in Alabama for Deer. It's great for a scope because it side ejects. Since the 30.30 flat nose bullet is no good for distance, it's perfect in the dense forest down there as most hunting is done from blinds or tree stands at less that 50 yards distance.
Scooter, good pick on the M-60. That one was many years ago.

Henry and Denny I'm talking about the famed 7.62x39 which ain't got it at longer range. 5.56mm same story. It's case is 45mm long and it's reduced caliber. A 7.62 x 54 is a full power cartridge as is the Mauser 8 x 57 (the 7.92mm rounded up) You 308/30-06 Springfield round has a 63mm case. The problem isn't the caliber its the weak cartridges- anything measured in the 30-45mm case length. There is no substitute for cubic inches
Yep. And I seem to move 1 thing and it displaces something else with 1/2 of that landing on the workbench and then I forgot where I was going with this other thing and I'll see something else that...
