after about a year of looking and driving the pinto with one wheel welded up i finally have found a replacement rear for it .. i dont know what it is out of but it is an early version 8 inch .. it is actually an inch narrower than the stock pinto rear ,, i dont know how i am going to fix the leaf spring mounts as i dont have a hot wrench anymore .. perhaps i can get mine back from the fellow i sold everything to .. i hope to be able to re use the stock pinto backing plates on the 8 inch rear and just re drill the 5 lug axles to 4 lugs .. i`ve done it before the other way around ,, drilled pinto front rotors to 5 lugs .. i quickly found that getting up off the cold concrete floor is much harder than it used to be and car parts are much heavier than they once were .. this task would have taken me not more than half a day 20 years ago but this time around i hope to be done by may 1st .. i missed an opportunity to get a 5 speed several weeks ago by not having a truck to go pick it up .. it came with an engine i did not want but the seller would not separate them .there is a junkyard in tennessee that is going out of business and they are selling a pile of complete 8 and 9 inch ford rears for 75 $ a pop .. i only bought the 8 inch while i was there but i plan on going back for a couple of 9 inchers as soon as i can find a buddy with a truck .. the 8 inch fit in the back of my corolla but i dont think a 9 will ..iv`e used up all my sick days at work .. can i call in dead ?

What does that mean, "one wheel welded up" ???

the fellow i sold the pinto to for a while did not know how to do a brake stand burnout so he would rev the engine up in neutral and drop it in drive to spin the wheels .. he did it one time too many and stripped the spider gears . then i got the car back from him ... i could not find anything to fix it with at the time so i welded one spider gear to the pinion case .. i knew i did not want to weld both spiders as it would make the car difficult to drive .. recently the rear had begun making some popping and crackling noises so i figured it was ready to give up again .. a fellow i know has several mustang 2 8 inch rears that are a direct bolt in but he wont part with any . some the V6 pintos came with 8 inch rears as well but they are as rare as hens teeth ..iv`e used up all my sick days at work .. can i call in dead ?

If you welded either of the two spiders you stopped the ability for the axles to rotate at different speeds, turning the differential into a "Lincoln Locker". I expect your popping & cracking is the sound of that one weld breaking, or the spider that you welded breaking. You've been driving with a locked rear since you did your welding.

not a bad looking bead for the first time i have welded in nearly ten years .. i had been concerned about how i was going to remove the spring seats since i did not have a cutting torch then it occurred to me i have a nice side grinder .. i just ground off the old weld as best i could then a couple of whacks with a BFH and off they came . i checked and triple checked my pinion angle and set it to the same 3 degrees down that the stock rear had but when i put everything together the rear is about 8 degrees down .. it does not look real bad .. after a test drive if i have any issues i can bring it back up with a few tapered shims i am going to redrill a few holes and reuse the stock pinto rear brakes .. wont be too difficult .. i dont yet know what i`m going to do about changing from 5 to 4 lugs .. i have done it the other way around many years ago but i guess i did not keep my drill jig set up .. as stated in my last post some mustang 2 axles would fix that but oh well ..iv`e used up all my sick days at work .. can i call in dead ?
