Any one know how to bypass a GPS system?

Oops , heading was wrong . Any one know how too bypass a GPS system. I have a phone with GPS and it can pinpoint down to a couple of feet and also show how fast you are traveling. This is pretty much the norm with a lot of cell phones. My brother said wrap it up with tin foil either that or carry a lead box

I'm not sure I understand what your asking, but.....

Are you talking about disabling the transmit feature so that your phone wont send your gps position out? If so it will vary by phone and model, and you would more than likely have to download a software flash file from a hacker community and upload it into your phone via USB connection. This of course may give you a virus in your phone; but, maybe not. I wouldn't suggest it though. Some manufacturers may also offer software updates to do this that would be free of the virus problems. Thats what I would try first I guess.

Jamming is also an option, though it is an illegal one and one that I would also suggest that you absolutely stay away from. That is unless you are ready to happily pay the supposed $11,000.00 fine to the FCC for it. Do a google search on the subject and you'll find "products" that do it though.

Anyway, good luck to you in your quest for info.

Gassersrule hit it on the head with the map. Men don't need anybody telling them directions, even if it is a gizmo.

To answer the question though, I'd turn the thing off!

I don't think that's right Matt. His and yours maybe; but, I have seen phones that it could not be turned off unless you downloaded the appropriate level of software for the phone. On my older personal Motorola, I could turn off the enhanced 911 feature through the menus. A buddy of mine though got the same phone from the same service provider (Cingular at the time) and could not turn it off. The option wasn't there. He also couldn't manually choose which band to use to make calls either which I could. The difference? The software level that Cingular upgraded to between my phone purchase and his.

Another example, of this is that I have dug through all of my menus and settings on my current work cell phone (Motorola), I can't find anywhere that I have the ability to turn it off. However, the old work phone (a Samsung) that I had before my current one, had the capability to turn it off through the settings menu like my older personal phone. That being said, I know that some of the phones will ask before transmitting your position when in a 911 call. So that may be where it is controlled on my new one, I just don't know. I've never dialed 911 on it and don't plan on it just to find out.

In any event BigTruckDriver, if you are worried about them tracking you, they don't need the GPS to do it, they can triangulate your position by the signal streangth received at different towers and times. If you don't want 'em finding you, turn it off, or don't carry it.

you can always turn off at least the GPS function that allows other people w/ GPS that know your # to see where you are, you can't always fully turn it off, to where 911 and the police get no signal.. but even then, if your worried about getting cought, cops can bounce your location off of the cell towers as long as your phone is on.

Most GPS systems require a direct open path to at least 3 of the satellites....such is why GPS doesnt work inside. However, there are some routines where the GPS is enhanced by the cell phone signal strength...to make the GPS work inside. You want to confuse the GPS but not screw up the phone signal. One way is to shield the GPS antenna but not shield the phone antenna....I'm not sure if your phone has both antennas in the same package OR if the GPS antenna is somewhere else in the phone case.

Try this...hold your GPS phone up against the headliner of the car (a metal roof). Do you have a GPS signal strength indicator? IF so, does holding the phone in the shielded location decrease the signal strength? If you have a signal strength meter for the GPS signal, do some experimentation...you might find a way to confuse it.
