    Computer question

I have problems with my pc. when I 1st turn it on, it gives me 2 errors, #1- CMEIIAPI - failed to start. #2- C:\Proga~1\newdot~\newdot~1.dll - error loading, could not be found, insert systems disc to fix.

Ok I have Everything packed in my garage to move! I didn't think I would still be selling my house 17 months later, my systems disc can not be found in the garage till I move!!!! So how can I fix this with out the disc, I have a Dell Dimension 4550
I need to load a couple grams and my drives won't work(the 3.5 floppy & removeable "F" drives do work), the computer will check them, and tells me they are work correctly. When I put a disc in, the light comes on for a few sec's then goes off (normal) but it does nothing, if I go to "My computer" it does not show my D & E drive (CD & DVD) but it see's my F drive (removeable)
I changed my printer and it won't work either, I keep getting different errors on that, out of paper,(it's not) it doesn't see the ink to tell me how much is left, it will print, but use no ink, ( it works for my wifes computer but not mine.
I need to fix this, I have to install Solidworks, and I can't wait till I move to find the disc in the garage!

    Help!!! Please

find that DLL file in a DLL site, follow the instructions on the site to install it, you just drop them in a system file folder.. if that don't work, reinstall the drivers
for the cd/ dvd drive, there available off the internet from dell.

    There are many possibilities.

The first thing I always do is run a virus scan using at least 2 different products. One of these products needs to be able irradicate worms. You seem to have several peculiar problems and that points to something fishy going on. In some cases the only way out is to do a clean install of the system.

You may also be on the verge of a hardware failure, most prominently a hard drive failure. With that computer if I was to do a clean install I would start with a new primary hard drive as well.

Reboot and see if the system will allow you to go into safe mode. During reboot keep pressing the F8 button. Follow the instructions to reboot into safe mode and try to determine what is wrong. usually this happens as a result of the last thing you loaded or did .

There's a start. Even though I get freeware from UT for virus and anti spyware I bought my own. It's called SpyNoMore and it works really well. It cleaned up stuff that free surfer, spybot, and spywareblaster could not.

    Thanks for the reply's.
I do have Gator in my computer, I had it for 6-7yrs, I don't get the pop-ups from it, supposedly they are no longer, I got a e-mail saying that 1 1/2 yrs ago, I use it to store my passwords in it. I think I did something to it, that it gives me a "failed to start" but it works normal.

I had a spyware virus about a yr ago when my anti-virus expired. I have "PC-cillin" anti-virus in it since, and I also have Comcast anti-virus & spyware protection. I also forgot to tell you, that a few months after we got the wifes computer, her disc drive quit, so I pulled mine and put it in hers, and hers in mine. to see if it would work, mine worked in hers, but hers didn't work in mine. But! ever since then I have to hit F1 to get it to start up. (about 2yrs now ) But now the other drive won't work. I don't know when it quit, I don't use it much. (Whats back up? reverse? ) jk I have another drive sitting here now to replace the bad one.

I didn't get the "C:\Proga~1\newdot~\newdot~1.dll - error loading, could not be found, insert systems disc to fix." till I got the spyware, I think I deleted something I wasn't suppose to! when I was getting rid of some spyware, and now my drive won't work.

I don't know what is with the printer, But ! I did make a discovery!!! Don't ever put a printer by baseboard heat! I killed two pricey printers before I realized i dried the guts shut! I think I need to junk the printers I have (got it free from my brother) and buy a new one.

I will go to the Dell site and have a look around.

I can run my computers, I don't know how to troubleshoot them. My lug wrench won't fit anywhere, and aircleaner keeps falling off!

We did a cat scan to it, found and removed the cat. It didn't help!

That PC of yours is about the same vintage of my old one. The hard drive got so corrupted that nothing I did fixed it - so I built a new computer in December with a little (LOTS!!) of help from my friends here - Denny, mostly. With a couple of aches and pains, it is working so much better then the old one. It will start and I can be on line in about a minute. The final cost, using premium parts and even with a new 19" monitor, a sound card and a graphics card was about $700. The sound and graphics cards were actually not needed as the new motherboard had integrated versions. When I was done with the new one, I 'fixed' the old Dell with a new $60 Western Digital Caviar 80 GB hard drive, reloaded XP plus a few other programs and gave it to my daughter in Virginia. She is now on line with it and says that it is very fast and working great. I would imagine the cat scan took care of any mouse problems but not hairballs in the hard drive

From the web - everything I read points to SpyWare.

One link says to uninstall 'NewDotNet' from the control panel/add remove programs utility.

If you can Google, search for "newdot dll" for more suggestions to get rid of it.

this from Error message when starting XP, NEWDOT~2.DLL - Viruses, Spyware and other Nasties.

I recognize that file, it's NewDotNet.dll, spyware that used to get installed with Kazaa and Morphius, (might still be there, too). It was a way to redirect IP addresses to URL's that weren't legitimate URL's, (for example, you could have a URL like www.blah.frank, even though .frank is not a real root domain). It supposedly tracks your surfing habits, as well.

One thing here is that these two programs are failing to load.....This is a good thing, they are both connected to spyware. The fact that they can't load tells me that the DLL's have been deleted. What's happening they are being called to load and can't be found. You can run MSCONFIG from a command line from there you should be able to remove them from the start up list.

Man! I feel like a kid cramming for the final test of the school yr! I have been reading till my head ready to pop! and I have not read more about something I don't understand, since school!
I have gone to the Dell site, for some reason their thingy can't check my computer for whats in my computer, and if I put it in manually it tells me it's not found! And of course they will talk to me for a fee! , They won't talk about any! questions about software on line.
I have manage to remove the NewDot stuff. I will deal with the gator stuff later.
I know that the DVD does not work. (It's the one out of the wifes that quit), but I have not figued out where the driver for the CD player is, or whats it's called. I need to find out what CD player I have, so that I can get the right driver from the Dell site.
I have to get some disk's so I can check to see if I can use my Roxio CD/DVD will burn disk's or not, I just know that my computer won't read disk's.

I'm going to shut down, my wife told me I can pull my origional DVD out of her computer and switch them back to see what happens!
    Bye!

    Pat,
CD/DVD burners. They are cheap replacements - here is the one I used when I rebuilt my old Dell for my daughter - any new one should be plug and play as mine was.

    Newegg.com - LITE-ON Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE 20X DVD±R DVD Burner - OEM

If you have your original as supplied Dell XP CD, why not just install a clean new hard drive.

This is, and again for my daughter's and my old Dell, and a duplicate of what was in there and possibly what you have in yours:

    Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar SE WD800AAJS 80GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

They will ship it and you will have it in your hands by Thursday/Friday latest. For about $80 you will probably get another 2-3 years out of your Dell. The only downside is that you potentially lose what files and programs are on your system - I did but on purpose as I didn't want to transfer crap to either my new PC or even the rebuilt unit. There wasn't a thing that I've missed but the 'FAVORITES' but am rebuilding that file as needed (I did download them to a CD, JIC as I did 'MY DOCUMENTS' and 'MY PICTURES')

AS A NOTE - with OEM listed items, you don't get anything but the part - no CD, much in the way of instructions, fancy box or extended warranty - but the item is significantly cheaper.

COOL, COOL, COOL!!!! I have my drives back!
I took the DVD player that I had put into mine from the wifes (about 2yrs agd) that quit after the 1st 6months, and put them back, everything came back. my CD player always worked till about a yr ago. I show both my E & D drives and they both work normal!
No more hitting F1 a start up! and the only error is for Gator.
I guess I pass the yr end test!
The DVD still does not work in the wifes, but it shows it in the "My computer" were mine didn't!
Now I can load Solidworks in!
I still have to fix the printer(A new one), and the Gator error I get. ( write down all my codes & passwords, then remove or fix it. ) and get the wife a new DVD player or just a CD burner. I have a good used CD drive sitting here I was going to try in mine.

Can I put a CD player in place of a DVD player, and not change the driver, or do I delete the old DVD driver, and install a CD driver, or just get a new DVD player?

    Thanks for all the help!

CD and DVD players won't require you to change a driver. A DVD player requires software to play a movie, however if you already have software installed you should be good. The same goes for CD and DVD burners, if the software is already there you should be good to go. Just swap out the drives.....Windows will handle it.
