John, have you ever seen the bumper sticker that reads "THE MORE I KNOW ABOUT PEOPLE, THE MORE I LIKE MY DOG?" It is funny because to some degree it is true.
I also find it humorous that the rat rod craze began because some rodders disliked the pretentiousness of "street rodders" and wanted to be free to build cars any way they wanted. Then all of a sudden, some rat rodders started looking down their noses at people they termed "gold chainers" who had a few bucks to put some bling on their cars. Not all rat rodders are this way, just some.
Bottom line, all of us humans have flaws and like to tell everyone else how they should do things...........it's just in our nature. You have to take people with a grain of salt and ask yourself when one of these opinions surface "does this person put any bread on my table?" Until they start sending you a check to build your car THEIR way, their opinion isn't worth the time of day.
Isolate yourself from the forums and car scene for a while, cut and bend some steel, then return to it when it becomes fun for you again. I parked my '27 for 7 years and didn't go to any car functions except Turkey Run.......I was just burned out on it too. Now it is fun again and I'm ready to take in some shows and cruises.
Hope the vacation does you some good bud.

You just got to learn to turn down the sound. I only pay attention to a select few. To many people trying to make their opinions the gospel. If I listen to all of the voices who were talking at me years ago, I probably wouldn't own any old cars. According to some, none where the right one. Damn glad I learned to turn down the sound and think for myself. My cars may not be typical hotrods, but I'm pleased with them. That's really all that matters.Bob

To me my car is my personal piece of art. it is not correct for the year and i could care less. when they give me grief about it all i do is ask them if they know what a sleeper is. if they do then i give them a wink. if they dont i ask them to look it up and get back to me. as far as it goes beauty is in the eye of the beholder. and since i am the one that puts in my time and effort then it is my eye that is the beholder. the laws changed here last year for antique cars. had to jump through a few hoops to keep my antique tags. So with the help of the guys on this site i got it ready for inspection. When i got my car all it had inside was a dash, torn carpet, headliner, and back seat. the body was in decent shape. The rear seal leaked the suspension was shot and the fuel pumped leaked. But I still loved it. When I got it to pass a full inspection I actually got tears in my eyes. My girlfriend thought that i had lost it. I told her that it was easy for her to put a couple of hundred dollars in a 1999 expedition and get it passed but for her to put only 300 in a 37 year old vechile and try it. As for the rest of the folks out there that i will come across as cruise in season start they can all kiss my ass. There are alot of 71's out there but none quite like mine. I really want to win something beacuse i am competive as all get out but if i dont at least i know that i personally did my best. and I did it all myself. I have yet to farm out any work and do not plan too.Last edited by jyardgirl; 02-18-2008 at 09:19 PM.

I went to local area charity shows with my Cobra. Sometimes a couple of my friends would also go with theirs. We all built our cars, mostly did all the major work ourselves. Never went to any show expecting to win a thing.
Anyway it was always rather funny when I/we would arrive. We immediately would have a crowd around the cars. Cobras for some reason always seem to draw a crowd.
At one show in Pt Gamble I was by myself and parked next to a guy with his T bucket(nice car). I'd wandered off to view some of the other rides at the show and as I was coming back the T bucket owner and one of his club buddies were by my car and I overheard his buddy ask Tbucket is it real and ol' Tbucket says in a deriding tone naw it's just one of those 'glas kit cars, cheap p'sos...don't now why they let these guys bring them here. Well I was a bit pissed and said yeah, it's mine it's a kit just like that pos T bucket over there....Tbucket really got pissed at that huffed and walked off muttering something foul....and to rub salt in his wounded pride my pos kit car won a trophy. First show trophy I ever won.
I'm a car guy...I like most anything I see at shows, some not as well as others and I admire the workmanship and skill some of these guys put in their cars. Don't care about the "politics" all that much, don't see the reason for it.
I can understand the guys with muscle cars that are purists, customizers,or all out go-fasters. Same with the guys with the A's, T's, Dueces, 33-48 street rods. But when they start bad mouthing someone because his isn't "correct" I always wonder who made the naysayers the car gods?"Breathe in... Breathe out... then move on with life. Life's too short to sweat the small stuff"

There is only only reason to go to any car/truck events, FUN....
If you're going for the approval of others & the trophies you're going for all the wrong reasons.
I go to see old friends, meet some new friends, eat some food, drink some beer, to look at cars/trucks && for only "MYSELF" && nobody else. Screw everyone if they don't like what you're driving & how you have it painted or not painted && if you win something it's just icing on the cake....joeDonate Blood,Plasma,Platelets & sign your DONORS CARD & SAVE a LIFE

until you drive in to a restraunt with your friends, and find 20 gang members waiting for you... and they give you the choice, go home or get your ass kicked..
don't worry about it
You see, that is what it is about for motorcycles. Me and some friends wore matching T shirts, and were perceived as a threat by the local motocycle club, and well.. you know the rest.
now I am armed. i PRAY they don't try it again. It WON'T be good..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

Every “car person” has a reason being involved with the vehicles they own. For some it’s the love of building, for others it’s showing what they can afford, and there are the ones where it’s the current “thing” to do.
Regardless at almost any gathering every participant with a vehicle there ha a little bit of a look at me attitude. Usually the derogatory people I have run into are the ones who have recently bought into the hobby, some of the die hard purists (who in many cases look at their own cars as an investment more so than a source of enjoyment) or the clown whose only car is the beat up Toyota in the parking lot.
There are different levels of involvement for car people. Some are truly hobbyists while for others it is truly a life style.
For those that have it as a lifestyle (like MANY of the members here), we were the ones who were here before cars became a fad, and will carry the torch after the others have moved on to something else. Over 40 years I have seen interest in cars rise and fall a few times, the core group of hot-rodders are generally some good people, the rest just come and go.I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....
Merry Christmas ya'll
