Both of those are very nice. I had a 48 Chevy in the past, and a couple of the Impalas. 63 was my favorite. Liked all the chrome. The 48 kept dropping the main shaft in the trans. But cool also. Traded it for a 55 Chevy 210 style.

ps: OH, Maybe gasser ?? (they also completely destroy alot of 60-65 impalas )) Yeah, he has a lot to learn about life, and the value of friendship over color or accent. Catch up to the speed of life gasser !! In gassers case, I think being young and dumb is the phrase.
First of all nothing against any Race . But what Gasser said is very true . I work with a guy that has Lowriders . I personally went to one of there big shows . And watched them at what they called break there cars for pride . They would jump ther cars up and down to see who's car would break first . I saw a mint 1979 Buick Regal totaled the roof caved in and the glass came out And a guy bent the body and frame real bad on a 1961 Impala SS . That P-ed me off real good . Not at all happy with what these Lowriders did to them cars .

Lowriders have sub groups just like any other car cluture. The people that install hydraulics and jump ares are very few. Most don't go the expense of hydraulics anyway. The fact that the Latinos save so many unwanted cars, 4-doors no exception, keeps them on the road.

Most are 99% stock but really done well. Paint and upholstry soak up the $$ and about all they do to lower them is put smaller diameter wheels and maybe shackles. They install a lot of era-correct accessories like teardrop spots and plenty of chrome.
There is no substitute for cubic inches

That sounds great and saving 4 door cars is a good thing . But most of the Lowriders in Chicago and Ind are the hydraulic body painted bad boy group . And they are very tight with each other But then again this is a rough Town .

I'm just waiting for Cuba to become our friend once again. If we want to credit any group of people keeping old cars alive, these guys take it! Lots of great 50's cars still running around over there due to trade imbargoes, once those hit the ebay market, watch out. Also great cigars!(only have a few a year, but Cuban cigars....)

I'm so sorry if any offense was taken to anything in this thread. If anything, I was trying to say that there was a whole car culture out there that I knew very little about, and that the tv show really portrayed the folks involved in this as very nice, everyday people who just like this particular genre of car. The show was very well done IMO and it appears that primarily people of a particular ethnic group build them. That is why I entered the statement that I hoped the term Latino's didn't offend anyone, I just don't know what the preferred, politically correct term is.

We have all become so sensitive to these things anymore that we aren't sure what is going to offend someone or not, so we kind of don't say anything. I grew up in a time when we laughed at our differences and kidded each other a lot and no one took offense.

As for Clubhotrod being one color or another, I don't think that ever enters into anyones mind on here. We are all car lovers and that is all that matters.

Don in High School at Davis Sr. High, the state was starting to cut programs like auto shop. So our school combined shop classes with Winter (i said Dixon by mistake above). So here I was working on a 68 mustang with a jacked up rear end and mags, and a fellow student from winters on a lowrider custom chevy van. We used to joke around with eachother, about our car cultures. His school was primarily hispanic, most kids were from Mexico and they're parents had moved to Winters while working the farms in the area. My school was 90% caucasion, but we were a University town so the other 10% ranged from african, iranian, chinese, japanese, etc.. representing quite a few cultures. The only racial tension was between the Ropers and the Dopers back then. We used to call ourselves the slang names like wap or dago(I'm italian) or whatever. Nobody took offense then. Now days, I wouldn't even consider using one of these terms for fear of getting shot or labeled a biget.

I got the point of this post and feel it was great. I didn't take offense at anyones comments, and if you can't use the term "they" to refer to a group of people then we are in big trouble!

This site is pretty PC everyone for the most part is respectfull. It is hard to write anything sometimes with out offending someone for reason's the writer never dreamed of. So... being a Dago/wap with a hot rod truck project, please feel to call me what you will in fun, I take no offense, and enjoy reading all postings here. I can't tell you how much I've learned here in the few short months since I joined, Thanks, Steve.

I would love to build a low riding dancer one day. Wanna build it my way though... instead of 800 lb of lead in the sled to power the pumps, I wan to mount a hyd pump right off the rear of the engine. Use hydraulic motors on the rear wheels to push the car. Put a processor in charge of all the hyd valves, and a wireless connection to the controller. Program the 'dance' routines to the push of a button.

Your right in califas (which our term for california) we refer to ourselves as chicanos. We dont get offended if you call us latinos or hispanic but we much rather be called chicanos. There are diffrent categories of lowriders from the tradional 1959 through 1964 and the bombs which predate 1955. We mostly concentrate on the prewar cars. We do like to maintain the stock motor and interior but we go all out on the paint and accessories. If we do any modifications, it is usually to the running gear and front end. The Peterson Museum in Los Angeles has its second exhibition of Lowriders. That will run until June 2008.

There was a time when lowrider only meant chicano. Now that is not so. you go to cars shows and blacks, asians, and whites are sporting them. and there are alot of folks who think lowriding is synonimus with hydralics. but its not so. been lowriding since i was 20 and i am now 45 and i have never had hydros. i wouldnt even think of them. what been done in the restoration and maintenace of these cars esp prewar cars is absolutely amazing. hats off to anyone who rescues a car from obscurity or the rust.
