    Bombs, the original lowriders.

    I just watched an interesting show on the Speed Channel entitled something like "Living the Low Life" about Bombs, the name given to the lowriders some folks build. I think it is pretty much a California based craze, and one that primarily Latinos (I hope that isn't an offensive term, if it is forgive my ignorance) build.

    I always knew they existed, even saw a few when we lived in California, but I never realized the extent to which these guys go to build them, or the history behind the culture. Just like we rodders have certain parameters that dictate how our cars are put together, Bombs are build to some strict guidelines too.

    Speed is not important..........low and slow is the slogan (remember Santana's hit song....."All my friends drive a Low Rider?" They generally build cars pre 1964 and strive to keep the bodies as original as possible, with all of the factory chrome and trim intact. They also adorn them with every possible accessory available back then..........Appleton spotlights, fog lights, mirrors, compasses, Desert Coolers, etc.

    The cars were really well done with fantastic paint jobs in primarily stock appearing colors, and all the chrome trim was replated and straight. Some are airbagged too. I really gained a new respect for these cars and the culture behind them. Yeah, some of the sunvisors and stuff was a little over the top for me, but generally I really liked all the cars. The people who build them spare no expense or effort to make them really well done.

    Here are some examples of these "Bombs."

    Since I'm Italian and Latin was the language of my way back relatives I'M offended. Who are these poseurs? That's not what Latin rides look like! Here............this is what they really should look like;

    It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.

    I watched that show and enjoyed it. We see the bombs and other lowriders from time to time. Most are really cool folks and definitely family oriented. They even have lowrider bicycles! It's just another branch of the car culture. Here's a couple bombs up at Hot August Nights

    By the way the song "Low Rider" was done by WAR not Santana. The band, minus one member, is touring again under the name "Lowrider Band" I just saw them on the Legendary Rythm and Blues Cruise last October. They also did Spill the Wine, Why Can't We be Friends, The World is a Ghetto and Cisco Kid among others.

    Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!

    I caught that one too, Don!!!! Some really great cars and I thought it was great that the club guys all brought up the emphasis was family, not gang crap!!!!! Good to see there are still some alternatives for the young-uns besides just the ricers!!!!!! Then I had to ask myself if our club was doing anything similar, and the answer was no.....

    I guess I prefer the lowriders to the bombs.....Stock stuff just doesn't do much for me, never has... Whenever we're in Texas visiting, I always take one night to hang out with a lowrider group there that a friend of mine belongs to..... Much like the club on the bombs show, they are all about family stuff and charity runs... Great bunch to hang out with.... Along with the usual collection of Impala's this group sports a bunch of Caddys, Lincoln's, a couple Mercedes, and even a chopped and dropped 30's something school bus!!!!!

    Don out west the proper term is chicano, they are not mexican, or latin, and if you imply that they are they will stab you! Growing up in socal, i have always loved the lowrider culture, its a shame that the early nineties ruined the image for "traditional" lowriders with guys like snoop dog, and dr dre, sporting 64 impalas, that was a lowrider staple, long before the rappers got ahold of them. Ive always told myself, one of these days i am gonna build a nice bomb! Nice topic too don, im down with a lowrider thread!

    In High school we jacked our cars up and the kids at Dixon high dropped theirs. Our shop teacher used to say, at least if it's jacked up in the back it will roll foward and you'll be able to see where your going!

    here are a couple of cars from our small collection,the impala belongs to my
    son, he and his friends are more into the low rider look or group,I talked him out of putting hydraulics on it, even though they can do lots of things with them,I've seen lots of cars detroyed with them,the 47 what I call my barn find,55,000 original miles,still smelled like a new inside 5 years when I got it,all we did is added the visors and 15'' whitewalls tires,wet sanded it a little and buffed, but please don't label me or my people as knife carryers,gang members or family culture groups,is club hot rod a white famliy or friends thing only?? I don't think so.. you build what you like,the way you like it ,or can afford, some ady I would like build a studdie like stu cool or a olds like
    dog tags, those are my 2 favorite cars so far,who those guys are doesn't
    matter to me,they are just guys that know thier stuff, I don't mean or want
