Although I recall that era, I missed the "break" while working on a book for a year so I do not know the details. I could just say nothing but I think a change occurred for the better in that now there are quite a few builds being documented of extremely high quality and the more civil environment gives the proper respect and even awe at the high level of craftsmanship on the Forum now. Maybe, probably, the level of civil respect here now has attracted those builders here so that is to the good for us all who learn from the high quality builds. Still Firechicken brings up a point in that a LOT of technical information was lost in the posts that were deleted. Overall, the Forum has improved due to this "learning experience", but some things were lost as well.

I must have been napping, too. I have never left since I joined and never been away for more than just a few days on vacation and I still missed all the "excitement". Oh well, this is a great site and I don't want to stir up trouble by being overly nosey, so we'll just "let sleeping dogs lie".Jim

Plain and simple.
My assumptions were based on a few things.
The first, was a posting from another member that had evidently been away on a break about the same time frame as myself and in one of their postings asked where Streets was. The reply was very short and direct as I recall, and stated that he had been banned and wouldn't be back.
The second, was in some postings in a Rat Rod thread that occured a while after that and alluded to incidents in the past that resulted in the banning of a couple members and a few others that left as a result of that heated engagement and the bans. As I recall that particular posting was a request for one of the moderators to step in at that point before things spiraled out of control and we ended up in another situation like the last one.
Finally, and specifically with regards to those I thought "that were banned and then allowed back." They were never banned. I had assumed they were because when I went digging through some of my old postings regarding questions that I had on an engine build for my firebird, all of their postings were deleted. That was the info I was referring to trying to track down when I started this thread. In any event, both Streets and the member who I assumed had been banned and allowed back had both provided a wealth of information in a lot of other postings as well, much of it very relevant and well worth the price of admission.
In the end, what happened obviously wasn't good; but, it wasn't near as bad as I figured it must have been based on my assumptions. I think Bob outlined the events that took place in my absense really well in his posting. I also remember the "bipolar" guy Bob was referring to and I'm not surprised at all that he was involved in all of this.
So, at least in this case, there is no second gun man on the grassy knoll...no conspiracy...just my incorrect assumptions and a concern I had that I didn't know how bad it really was so I left it alone, until I started this thread.
One final thing, I think Don made a really good point with regards to the number of build threads that have sprung up since then. I hadn't realized this as a difference between "then and now" before and I agree it is good to see them. I guess that's what this is all really supposed to be about anyway.
At least for now, in the words of Forrest Gump...."that's all I have to say about that"....

Kind of glad all of this occur before my time. My curiosity is peaked but unlike the stupid cat, I intend to dodge this one as best that I can.

Lucky for you guys though, as you can see, I set the standards high enough that no politician will ever qualify....Sometimes NOW are the "good old days"...
