Unless you have kids that you need to keep an eye on - a pool, IMHO, is one of the biggest money drains a homeowner can have. My last house I had a 17x35 in ground pool with all of the grief that went with it - covers(summer and winter), pumps, a concrete deck, toys, a raised and terraced wood deck, and more. The kids graduated from college and went to do their 'thing'. I might have been in it 6 times in 8 years. The pool was covered and not reopened for 3 years and then finally by the new owner. My son helped him reopen it (the new guy couldn't find me ) and the scum was about thick enough to walk over . Pool - this new house had an above ground pool and a condition of sale was that the seller remove it and make it disappear from my life

Pools are great while the kids are small, but when they move out they become a chore. When we built the house we are now living in I elected to put in a hot tub. That to was a mistake. We used it about 2 to 3 times a month. My neighbor was intersted in a hot tub,so I made a deal with him.Take the hot tub and Mahagony decking ,replace the grass and it's yours. He took the bait and I was out of the hot tub business. All my neighbors have pools or hot tubs and they are rarely used.

Ain't it amazing that the kids can convince you that need that pool. "Dad, we'll clean it" Yeah - sure, twice, maybe!!!

Hot tubs - what a frickin' waste. Most of the new houses around here either have a hot tub or a bathroom 'spa' or both. I don't know a single person that uses them after the first 3-6 months.

We had an above ground pool for 16 years (until it sprung a leak). We used it frequently when my daughter was between 5 and 15, but as she got older she had better things to do. Our pool season was early June until the end of August at best. My wife loved it, I didn't. I was the chief in charge of cleaning, repairing, purchasing all chemicals, and accessories, etc, etc. Got old pretty fast. Now that it is gone, I truly do not miss it. Hope to never have another one.

We have a hot tub on the rear deck. Had it for 20 years. Used to use it through out the year. Kind of nice to be in it with snow falling on your head. But I got older, get colder easier, and can't stand to freeze my butt off getting to and from the warm house. So we run it from April to Thanksgiving. Still nice but what an energy hog. Even at 220 volts, it will make your electric meter spin like mad especially when the heater has to run constantly to keep the water in the pipes from freezing. Wife still loves it and it's still kind of neat to sit in it and watch the meteor showers in August. But when we move, the spa will not relocate with me and I won't be getting another one.

I believe if you ran this as a legitimate ad on craigslist, you'd get some takers....

I agree with you guys on this one for sure.
My wife has been asking me to fill the pool up with dirt for probably ten years. It’s an in ground concrete bottom, with concrete blocks, for the sides and lime stone blocks around the top. It has a deep end with a diving board but by todays standard it’s not deep enough. We first move here in April it was still covered and the cover kept getting water building up on top, I would pump it out until one day I got smart and figured the cover was no good and the water was coming through the cover as fast as I could pump it out. First year it was sure a pretty sight with the white walls and the blue sky giving the water a nice shade of blue. The second year we decided the pool needed to be painted. Before we could paint the bottom needed to be sand blasted first. A 4x4 big block Chevy carried a full load of black beauty while towing a rental industrial size compressor. What a job that was black beauty goes a long way when you have a hose the size of a fire hose {air and material hose}. Wife still wants to fill it up with dirt I have just about reached the point too let it go also. I thought if we ever sold the house it would add to the price but now I’m like {IC2} they may want it filled up. If {HOSS429} or anyone else wanting to get rich quick would like to invest a little money I could advertise it to be sold by the square foot or sell tickets and have a drawing winner need not be present to win!! I forgot to mention rain water is the only thing it holds now. They are a pain to keep them going, and where I live you couldn't use it that much anyway.
{Dave Severson} You could get as many holes as you need but I can’t ship. {techinspector1} I advertised a rear window for a 1976 Chevy Nova, and you could not believe the people that called thinking they were going to get a 76 Nova for $25.00 and they would get upset when it wasn’t the car.

I know what you mean about the car window ad. I just put a pile of parts in the local paper, and only my email addy for them to contact. That way, no annoying phone calls.

When rebuilding the house after the fire, I had the bright idea that a jacuzi in the bathroom would be great. The wife absolutely loves it, the heat takes the pain out when her kidneys are hurting. I mostly use it in the winter after a cold ride home from work, on the chief. Every now and again I get the urge to hop in it, but the wife definitely gets some use out of it.

I think having it in the house is the way to go. It is less drain on the power bill in the winter, no privacy issues, no bugs, etc.

If you pool holds water and you simply fill it in,you'll be creating a swamp in your yard. You may have to get in there with a jackhammer to bust it up. Check with your town clerk,if it shows up on the tax map,you might have to get a permit to remove it from the tax rolls. Both your taxes and liability insurance should go down with it gone though.
