Hey I am on three boards anyway, two of which are about computers and I can hardly keep up with them so I just cleaned up the messages on the other boards, but I did work on the roadster today. I cut a D-bar to length and had one end milled at a local machine shop and installed it between the Vega box on the cross steer and the GM column. I am writing this because I do not trust the Speedway universals with the set screws. I went about a mile away to John York's Cobra shop (four cobras in progress of which two are finished) to ask about the D-bar and he said he runs a pin through them and then adds a bit of weld. On the other hand the tech guy at Speedway warned me not to weld them because the heat would ruin their temper. Sooo, I just plan to drill through each end and run a cap screw through with a lock washer to hold it. What do you folks think?

If possible Don, I'd use a castle nut in conjunction with a cotter pin.Ken Thomas

Don,
Looks to me like the Speedway U-joints have lock nuts just like the Borgesons. Loctite the set screws and tighten the lock nut. I have Borgesons, and they lock up just fine. I also drill pilot holes about 1/4" deep in the DD shaft so there's no chance of the joints slipping on the shaft.

In tech, the only place a set screw and locknut are acceptable are at the pinion shaft. All other connections must either be welded or through-drilled using a bolt and locknut.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

Tech1, thanks for the "official" suggestion! I usually like to think this stuff over and mull it around. Thanks Henry and Pat. I think I will set it up with locktite and indented holes on the flat parts of the D-bar and then when it is rolling and I can get it up on a lift I will have all the joints except the pinion tack welded in place. At present the lower joint is only accessible from the bottom of the car.

When did we come up again? I haven't been able to get on the last 24 hours. Any posts from Brent as to what's going on?" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

Pat have a safe trip, take it slow and easy. And congrats on the move. I hope you find a place that has a big shop! I would love a country place with a 50x50 shop to spread out in!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

I've been busy since Friday checking out places for my daughter to live when she goes away to nursing school this fall so when I couldn't get online on Friday it was no big deal. But I couldn't get on line on Saturday either, so I knew the glitch was not in my system. It's good to be back today.Bob
