Just something you might want to keep in mind the next time you launch off on one of your rants against the oil companies who are responding to the international markets just like you did.

Caught a commercial the other night, don't remember what credit card company it was, but there sales pitch was that you could use your cell phone to find out exactly how much more you could charge on your credit card!!!!! What a laugher!!!! Is the responsible use of credit just a thing for the history books now??? Another one that I got PO'd about stated that better then half the households in the country have more then $25,000.00 in CREDIT CARD DEBT!!!!! Please, tell me that was an exaggeration!!!! No wonder our dang economy is so upside down, seems that there's not many people or folks in our government who still know what a budget is, or what living within your means is.......Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Just another way of doing business Barb.... Nothing matters as long as you show a profit!!!!! Any other priorities went away with the demise of the government of the people, by the people, for the people. Government is no longer public service, it's just another business. The main business of the government is to take care of the people who are in the government.... The voters are no longer an issue....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

That represents less than 5% of our total market useage...................do you really think that will make any kind of significant contribution. Odds are also pretty good that there is some government program that is either subsidizing these exports, or in some other way motivating the market to make what seems like an imprudent decision.
Here's the real problem, the good Senator is grandstanding to get his name in the news because our politicians who have for all intents and purposes shut down any new exploration and production of domestic resources, reducing worldwide competition thus raising prices. Instead, they mandate displacing food crops for fuel, thus contributing to higher food prices as well. They mandate low sulphur diesel fuel and biodiesel which have driven up the price of diesel fuel to historically astronomical levels. They mandate upwards of 28 different "recipes" for gasoline thus causing prices to increase. Where are the investigations into the politicians causing all of these problems? They and their lapdog media buddies have effectively propagandized a significant enough portion of our gullible citizenry into being focused on the oil companies as the villains. Everyday the oil guys produce product that's key to our daily existance. They make it convenient and easy to acquire, and barring government interference, they always have enough for our needs (so far). They make a modest profit by general US industrial comparison (surprised? Yes, another example of propaganda when a 10-11% profit margin is "obscene") How do your congress members stack up to that. What to they produce on a daily basis that's of any value to your life? How efficient are they at it? How much do they pay into our tax collection process. (You did know that Exxon-Mobil paid even more in federal tax than the profit they made didn't you?.............................didn't you?) I'd have more faith in you oil company haters if you had any perspective on where the real bottle neck in our energy supply is.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

Hey Uncle Bob..... Looks like all the finger pointers in government are the real problem.... Got to wonder what the price of fuel would be today if the oil companies were still small and the government would have stayed the heck out of the oil exploration business?>?????
As with any other issue, all the politicians have to do is point a finger at some alleged culprit, "leak" the info to the media, then watch the feeding frenzy begin.... In this case the government has totally handcuffed the oil companies with senseless laws and regulations that make building new and more efficient refineries and supplying them with US oil to be not cost effective.... Our greedy use of oil forces the oil companies to import the oil refine it and sell it, they keep raising the price and we keep paying it. Then, the politicians on one hand will blame the oil companies for making such huge profits, and on the other hand back the tree huggers and prevent new wells and pipelines from being built...... The consumer loses, the oil company makes a profit, and the politician keeps his job....
Seems the politician is playing both ends against the middle, and taking no responsibility or any action that would actually resolve the issue....
Did I make all this too simple again???? I don't know, and don't even understand... What I do know is that we are in a society that loves to blame somebody else, and accept no responsibility themselves.... Maybe it's just good old fashioned greed that will be our downfall...?????? I sure as heck don't know....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

I know that if we kept all of our oil exports it would still not be enough to fill our needs. I am far from a idiot. But I also know that if we kept our oil that the price would come down. The same way that when colombia and argentina were getting ready to get into it the price went up. the same way that when our pres ordered anoth 17 mil. barrels into the reserve the price went up. all it takes to send the price up or down is a word and a gester. MAYBE if WE make this gesture then the price will come down. At least this senator made a stab at trying to find out what the hell is going on. They tell me that the price of food is going up because of the grains that are being used in biofuels. Then they tell me that the price of food is going up because of the cost of shipping it. Which is it. or is it both. Either way they are slowly killing the middle class. We have to work to pay our mortgage but can not afford too because of the gas it cost to get there every day. They have plan after plan for the mortgage lenders but not for the people who have to pay the loans. This shit has got to stop. When i was younger we thought that it was criminal that the elderely had to chose between healthcare or food. It is not any better that the middle aged have to choose between a roof over our heads or food. Somebody needs to do something to stop this.BARB

I'll only take issue with one of the things you said Davey, we're not greedy with our use of petroleum. We produce right at 35% of the global economic output (hardly a "plummeting" economy). We only consume somewhere around 20% of the world's petroleum products (pretty damn good productivity in my book, and it means the others are really lagging). The notion we're greedy is an example of more manipulation by the political class.
Barb, I'm not really interested in picking on you, and I don't think you're stupid, but you are a typical echo chamber for oft publicized misconceptions (dare I say lies?). Let me help you with some of the false choices you put up there that you apparently didn't give a second thought to. If I'm effective, perhaps the next time someone tries to pawn one of them off on you you'll see them as being foolish. Choose between food and healthcare? Helloooooo..........if you don't eat you won't need health care. Sounds cruel, I know. But it's only logical. The only reason a silly question like that can fly at all is we're a land of such abundance that we don't worry about where our next meal comes from.
Yes, it's both the cost of petroleum, and the use of grains for ethanol, and there's more to it. It's also competition with the rest of the world that has the same nasty habit we do..........they like to eat. Grains are commodities, just like steel, iron ore, molybdenum, and crude oil. All those commodities are sold on a world market everyday. It's basically an auction, and the more anxious the bidders are the higher they push the price. (that's why your assumption that if we "kept" that tiny amount of domestic product the price would go down is completely wrong) So everyday now we're having to compete "for survival" against others who think they have as much right to live as we do (imagine that). Do we as a citizenry still have the guts to compete, or will we just decline further into our whining abyss and beg the politicians to throw us some crumbs (THAT'S how we would really lose the middle class!). To further add to the price increases is the lowering value of the US dollar. It's dropped some 20% in the last year or so. So in effect, had the dollar remained valued where it had been petroleum would be about 1/5 less today. Now, those politicians you apparently trust so much are working on a farm subsidy bill of something around $128billion...................at a time when farm commodity prices are at an all time high!!!! Yeah, now there's showing real common sense! Where's all the bitching from the populace on that? That seems like REAL gouging to me.
We're hardly in a soup kitchen environment. Fuel prices are painful to adjust to, but our core use of fuel for getting work done, heating our homes, and powering our devices is important enough that we can cope by adjusting other of our spending. Please don't trot out the other oft used guilt trip ploy of the poor family who can't even do that. For the very few of those people who really do exist we have many existing safety nets already in place. For the rest, maybe they need to decide if cable TV or an internet connect, another pair of Nike shoes, or any of the other "nice to have" items in our lives really are more important than getting to work. We haven't had to endure tough times as a nation in so long we've forgotten what it is to have to prioritize.....................we just want it all.............and if we're unable or unwilling to pay for it ourselves, lets demand "the government" do something about it!!!!Last edited by Bob Parmenter; 04-23-2008 at 11:40 PM.

You're right Bob, greedy wasn't really the word I wanted.... Maybe I should have used stupid.... Anyway, the folks I'm referring to are the one's driving a 12 mpg SUV or 4 WD crew cab pickup for daily use and commuting...... I guess it's their right to drive what they choose....but it seems ironic that these same people complain the most about the cost of gasoline and diesel!!!!!!!
Our afternoon coffee place affords a good view of the commuters returning to town after work everyday.... It's almost hilarious to see all the Tahoe's, Excursions, and 4WD pickups with one person in them returning home after their daily 100 mile round trip commute to Sioux Falls where they work!!!!!
Maybe we're just spoiled.....I don't know.. But it seems to me that a bit of applied common sense could solve a lot of our problems....
As for our government..... How is it people can sit back and expect the government to solve all their problems?????? Our government created most of the problems, and it's a cinch they have no incentive to solve them....
The government is NOT going to come up with a solution to our current fuel price issue....Why should they??? They ride around in a government owned car with a government credit card....it doesn't effect them.... We buy their airline tickets, pay for their vacations, pay their health insurance, and pay their retirement...... and you REALLY think they're going to give all this up?????
The sooner that people quit blaming the government, the oil companies, or whoever and quit expecting some government agency to come up with a program that will solve all their problems and make the price of gas .50/gal and take some individual action on their own to solve their problems, the sooner the problems will end...Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!
