alternate ways to heat home
has anyone had any experience with an alternate heating source for your home such as this? It claims to heat a 1000 square foot area and cut your heat bill up to 50% They are talking a huge increase in natural gas this winter, big shocker there.

My neighbor across the street has one and he swears by it. I went over to his house about 5 months ago and he had it running in his family room, but it heated the entire first floor. He used to heat with oil, but now he uses this unit. He liked it so much he became a dealer for the company that sells them in Lancaster County.
I was thinking about getting one for my daughter's apartment when she goes to college this fall. The apartment is in an old house and the previous tenant told her that it got real cold in the rear during winter. They are quite popular here in central PA. They are an infra-red heating system, so you could sit on the box without toasting your buns. Another reason he likes it is because they're safe around kids.Bob

They use an infrared lamp pointed at copper plates. They draw either 750 or 1500 watts of power, so the electricity bill will be going up. Electric heat is usually nowhere near as cheap as natural gas.
This guy tested a couple.
1500 watts = 5118 BTU/HR, by the way, so considering that a small gas furnace is around 70-80,000 BTU/HR, you may need a few.Jack

my grandfather bought 1 and quickly realised, it wasn't very good and sent it back within the gaurentee period...
We have 1 of these at my house. it does not heat the house by itself, but used in conjunction
with the furnace, the furnace does not fire up as frequently, and this heater uses a lot less gas than if the furnace had to fire upYou don't know what you've got til it's gone
