Long Arm of the Scrappers Hit Again

I just got back from northern Ontario, Hearst to be exact. On the way into Hearst from the east at Wed noon, there was a fairly large number of older vehicles lined up against the bushline. A lot of round rooflines, I'm guessing late 30's, 40's and 50 vehicles. With a number of later models (70's and 80's) parked here and there, making it hard to see what was there. Plus an over abundance of "Keep Out" and "No Trespassing" signs for good measure. I would always check to see if anyone was around, but could never find the owner. This time though, as I drove by, I was disheartened to see 4 large, screened, scrap steel trailers parked in the field. Two were full, and the large excavator was filling the third one with flattened car/truck bodys. Of course, the later stuff, 70 and 80's era vehicles were untouched. I don't know how good of shape any of it was, but there had to be something there of value besides the steel. On the way back south on Friday morning, I went past there around 10am, and the three trailers were gone. The forth was being loaded with heavier looking pieces,(engines, trannys?) hard to tell since it was back off the road far enough. Nothing but ghosts now. Did get some pictures of other vehicles for you to check out. Sniper

The Chevy truck had a For Sale sign on it about two weeks ago. It's in Hearst
Green Buick is in Cochrane Ontario right across from the Husky Station.
Jeep in the weeds is half way between Cochrane and Hearst.
Mystery Coupe is about 1 1/2 miles west of Kapuskasing. Really have to look between the trees to see it, about a 1000 ft off the road. Talked to the owner, was politely told it's going to stay there where it is. I have never been told so nicely to bugger off before, as least she was pretty.
Arctic sign just for the heck of it.
Moose and wolf diorama at the Hearst Info Center. Bull moose is about 15 ft high, wolves are about 4 ft high.

    Scrap prices

Are thru the ceiling right now...Unfortunately it's taking it's toll on the parts cars...Back in 02 I crushed out my yard for 1.25 per 100 lbs. That was one million pounds at that price....I sold the junkyard in 06...Last price I heard was 14 bucks per 100....kinda sickening...All the guys I know used to save the "old stuff" at these prices they are crushing out running and driving cars as well as the old stuff...

It's going to get worse, China has put a bounty on all our copper & steel, they are running out of materials, and need it now!

I can see it from the owners side of things, they are in business to make a buck, profit isn't a dirty word. But how difficult would it be to make it available first? This didn't appear to be a business, just a collection of parked vehicles that grew in volumn over time. But from the signs that were there, no one was going to get anything from it. First it was hoarded, then destroyed. It's to bad it couldn't have been sold, or parts of it at least, so it could have stayed in circulation as parts, or running vehicles. I have no idea what was going on in the background, maybe the property was sold, or an estate deal. Who knows? It's still a shame it couldn't have been put to use though. Sniper
