I will say I like it, I check in pretty often just like here. Guess I just haven't been beat up there yet, most of my beat up's were in my younger days, someone knocking me through windows that weren't opened. Thank God those days are over!!!

Lots of good read in the jalopy journal.
I have a bunch of good friends there but don't spend much time, it's too busy. A thread will fall off page three in a couple hours.
There is a tremendous wealth of talent and experience there. Any crap you have to go through is well worth it to have the likes of flat earnie or the Dirtys chip in and lend a hand with questions. Especially on vintage stuff.

It's a large group with lots of activity on the board. You can check in several times a day, and always find new posts.
All kinds of info there, but a couple things have driven me away. If you are not a solid fan of vintage rods ....the way they see it.... you will get heavy criticism, and there is no flexibility on that point. People who don't favor those cars will be labeled "gold chainers", or simply dismissed as not knowing anthing about "true" hot rods.
I would not recommend the site, unless you think primer, bias ply tires, and a 6 cylinder are components of the ultimate rod. I should mention that there are many members who like other things....but they remain silent.
The other thing that bothers me are the 4 cookies that are planted in my computer every time I visit, which slows it down a lot. I emailed them and complained, but the moderator clearly did not care if I liked it or not.......so I stopped visiting.Last edited by HOTRODPAINT; 09-25-2008 at 07:12 PM.

Yep, all of the comments above are pretty accurate. It has a huge membership, with some heavy hitters in car related businesses who are members, like Jesse James, and supposedly Jay Leno lurks (or maybe posts under a secret user name ) Things move fast there, post wise, and if you are into traditional hot rods and customs there is a wealth of information to be gotten.
I lurk, but don't post there, and find a lot of interesting threads to read. It is true that the majority of the members are focused on a very narrow area of hot rodding...........namely what they feel are cars built in the "traditional" way. Many don't like modern additions to a car, like electric fans and alternators, and some have no reservations about voicing their opinions when they feel the need.
But if you go on with a good attitude and don't try to change the tone of the forum, you will probably be ok. What ever you do, do not use the two words that will get you blasted, and those words are RAT ROD, The popcorn comes out when someone slips that term in.
A lot of our members are also on there, my own Son Dan is a member, and is treated very well. His being a member there is one reason I don't post on it.............he is only a member of that one forum, and it wouldn't be fair for me to encroach on his one little piece of privacy. I let him have that one all to himself.

I guess I'll skip it for now. The oldest thing I have is a 63 Nova, probably not what they consider a real hot rod. Maybe I'll visit when I get something a bit older. Thanks for all the replies guys, no shortage of help here!I ain't dumb, I just ain't been showed a whole lot!

Considering the amount of activity on that site there isn't too much of value to me..I don't waste my time there anymore..I'm sure there are a lot of good folks there but the jerks take the center stage..Kind of like going back to elementary school..

Seems like a good time to mention something I've noticed.
I belong to several message boards, and a percentage of them have been taken over by radical personalities, who seem to be there to promote their own likes, and discourage anyone with a different outlook.
My home town is an example. Their message board seems dominated by poitical radicals. Every subject seems to be diverted to those issues, and I feel like I'm in Idaho or something. The result is that I have almost stopped going to the site, and am very hesitant to post.
I don't know how moderators can control that (If they aren't a part of the problem) but I think the only way is to have a code of respectful behavior, and enforce it to the point of giving the worst offenders "the boot".
In the world of cars, I have very broad interests, and in the world of people, I believe in everyone's right to their own opinion. That is why I am on this site every day......and I enjoy it! My thanks to the moderators. :-)

Been a member there for over 10 years.
Always been treated well even though I drive a Wescott bodied 32 roadster, make my own aluminum parts and do things a little different in some cases.
What does happen over there is the influx of what I call the 14 year old syndrome of opinionated wanna-bee hot rodders every once in a while.
And my apologies to right thinking, non-opinionated 14 year olds, we have a bunch of those as well and they're a pleasure.
It's ok to have opinions, but best to express those like you would in person when you're hanging out in someones garage.
Differences are politely expressed most times, but the problem seems to be the cyber tough guys.
Nuff said there.
Lotta women on the board as well.
They get treated with utmost respect just like they do here.
Seems like the HAMB is on a downward trend of the opinionated wanna-bee crowd population-wise so things are getting better.
Plus, we're having a two week 'tech week' going on and that always brings out some interesting stuff.
Don't quote me, but I think the cut-off date for cars is 1964.
Even so, if you're having a tuning problem that could pertain to any hot rod, they'll talk to you and offer some good advice.
No different than any board that specializes.
I wouldn't go on a Chevy board and ask FE questions.
Keep in mind as well Mark Twain's comments about 14 year olds and fathers.
Works the other way around as well....C9

Most of the time newbs who get roughed up didn't bother to read what the board was about and just blundered in. When I first posted I got dogpiled about some comment I made in a discussion about what new SUV to buy. I came back and told the guy that if anyone ever talked like that to my face, one of us wouldn't be getting up. I never had another problem after that, just a few keyboard tough guys that need stood down, not near as bad as it used to be though.
FWIW, flat black and red wheels are pretty laughable to the general populace there, and don't mention the RR word, Ryan deleted a whole thread I started because I used that term.
If you ever lurk or register, look at the stuff AV8, Mike Bishop, JimA or pendajo build, and also Dirty31. The stuff these guys do is worth the looking. Lots of others too.
