Never had a Vega, but did have a couple of "smokers". My first car, a '51 Ford, used so much oil when I bought it that it came with a five gallon can of reclaimed in the trunk; looking in the rearview mirror, you saw two spiraling smoke clouds following the thing. After I got the money back in the bank from paying for the car, I set about rebuilding the engine, and it din't smoke anymore. Wife had a Corvair when we got married, and I "rodded" it - larger cylinders, lumpy cam and solids, four carbs, headers, and an extreme penchant to leak oil, most notably from the oil cooler onto the headers and fins. She said it always looked like it had dirtied it's pants after I messed with it.
And then a newer model....
