Red line tires could be touched up with a red marking stick...kind of like a crayon. As I remember, the original red lines were Firestone Wide Ovals....then UniRoyal made them....dont think Goodyear ever made red line tires. Somewhere about 1968 or 69, the raised white letters came out...if my memory serves me.

I think B.F. Goodrich and Uniroyal made them. I believe the Uniroyals were the official "Tiger Paws" type, that showed up on the GTO in '64.
If nobody gets this soon, I'll tell you.

I should add as a footnote on tire trivia, that we have a retired Chrysler designer here in Tucson, who claims the original idea for the "Blue Streak" tires.

Were'nt red line tires supposed to be capable of
higher speeds?

Actually, what I have read on several occasions is that, the traction they gave was not too good, but a big part of the popularity was the fact that they "squealed" more than most other tires. This is very important when leaving the local "Dog & Suds"!!! :-)~

OOPs!
I stand (sit) corrected on the 442 redlines.
A man was watching his wife as she prepared to fry sausages in a pan. He noticed that before placing the sausages in the pan, she always cut off both ends, threw them away, and cooked only the middle...
