The Peggy Sue that you refer to is Peggy Sue Gerron. She was the first wife of J.I.Allison, the drummer of the Crickets, and the person the song was named for. The original title was Cindy Lou after one of Buddy's nieces.
Peggy Sue wrote a book about Buddy that Maria Elena Is not too fond of and she tried to keep it from being published.

Sonny Curtis wrote and recorded "The Real Buddy Holly Story" and it's more accurate than the movie ever was. I don't know much about Ritchie Valens so I won't comment on the movie only that the two actors who portrayed Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper were idiots.
There are a lot of things I don't know much about, but Buddy Holly is not one of them.
I just added that to my Netflix queue.. I will admit the actors that played The Big bopper and buddy holly in Labamba were pretty lame..

Where was I when I got the news that Buddy Holly was dead? I was in 8TH grade Elementary and in first period when the principal came over the PA and gave the news that the plane carrying ,Holly, Richardson and Valens had crashed killing every one on board. The girls in class started crying and screaming ,and the principal had the whole school come to the auditorium to listen to radio broadcasts about the crash. It was something that I never forgot.
In later years my new sister-in-law reveled to me after I had bought a some Big Bopper records that she had lived across the street from him in the middle 50's and knew him well .She said that he was one of the most talented people she had ever known. He was a DJ at radio station KLVI ( I think thats the call letters ,been over 40 years or so!)could play the guitar and piano and wrote songs and was a very good dancer too! This station was in Beaumont ,Texas.
In my later teen years I became a DJ and I'll never forget a little promo that the station manager recorded for an oldies show that I hosted at one time. He said"The old songs are the best, for they always contain a memory of where you first heard them"This is true because I remember what I was doing or where I was when I first heard their songs that I liked.
