    Drag Race High

Have any of you watched this year's Drag Race High on the Speed Channel? Did you also watch it last year? I watched almost every episode of last year's show, and enjoyed it a lot. However, I can't say the same about the latest one, in fact, I think I am done watching.

What made last year's version so enjoyable for me was the way the students took the challenge seriously, and buckled down to create a couple of very fast cars and work toward a common goal. It was filmed somewhere in the South, and I liked the way all the Kids were respectful of their teachers, and were generally very nice young boys and girls.

The two schools they chose this time are out of California (I think) and there is not one Kid there who stands out to me as being sincere or even interested in winning the contest. For the most part they are pretty rowdy and more interested in getting into trouble .. What lost it for me was the egg throwing episode, where even their teacher was in on it..................what an example for a teacher to set for his students! Then he does doughnuts in the parking lot with Kids standing all around. Finally the school security came and stopped it.

Then there is the other teacher who teaches his Kids honesty by ordering parts before the contest started. There were rules, and he chose to ignore them rather than take the high road and use this as an opportunity to teach them right from wrong. If I were the Principal of those schools I would be extremely embarrassed to have my school shown in that light, and I would have two less teachers on my faculty next year.

Young people don't want teachers who are their "pals." They want and need teachers who set a good example and who will not tolerate acts of vandalism against another school.........and certainly who do not participate in that vandalism. So there, I've aired my rant........does anyone else who saw the show feel the same, or am I just overreacting?

I get that, but it is based on two REAL schools and the students in those schools. It isn't like watching a scripted show, but rather a slice of life.

I watched alot of the 1st one, they built some nice cars. Big truck is right though. Controversy, Drama, Violence, those are the 3 main ingreedients for a TV show. Its kinda like Orange County Choppers, Every one tunes in to watch Paul Senior chew out, argue, 8itch and threaten to stick his size 12 up thier arss. They dont even build thier bikes.

They buy an outsourced frame, gas tank, fenders, motor. They modify the fenders and sometimes the gas tank. They weld a couple wrenches or bulltes on the thing and have someone else paint it. Then the next thing you know the whole world thinks they are bikers. Every time someone asks if I saw the episode where Paul did this, or Duane from Boyds shop yelled about this. Its never about what they actually built.

It's the Dumbing down of America.
the new American way is not to be a responsible, respectful, productive part of your community.
Instead be a lazy, selfish, POS, complain and keep your hand out so someone else will pick up your slack.

I would beat my kids if either of them acted that way, and beat them twice if they were dumb enough to do it on t.v.

Don, I think you will find that "justice was served" to one of the teachers in future episodes.

I agree that it's "unbelieveable" that anyone with the great responsibilty of a autoshop teacher should act the way the Oceanside teacher has on TV.

One of my sons sponsers offers the students help after the fourth episode. They really give the students much better guidence in building a competitive race car than how they started out. I attended the final filming and will tell you that it turns out awesome. The quickest car runs straight with a 8.01 ET, at over 170 MPH.

That's good to hear. I know tv is tv and all that stuff, but it really po'd me to see how irresponsible someone in charge of forming young people could be. And they obviously had little respect for him as a role model, especially when he is right there in the middle of defacing the other school. No wonder the kids were only interested in fun and games and took the whole thing as a joke.

I read on another forum he was terminated Feb 12th. If that is true, it was long overdue IMO.

I watched it last night and I feel the same, there is only a few students from each school that seems to want to do this and the others just like the idea of being on TV

I still would like to see Monster Garage come back. Had some good builders on there with some skills that made you enjoy watching it

I have never seen the show, so I can't speak directly about any of the episodes. I am, however, a high school teacher and I can tell you when kids see people their same age doing stupid stuff on TV, they come to school expecting to get away with the same kind of undesirable behaviour.

Education in this country is already in dire straits for several reasons including poor parenting at home, the dumbing down of the system, and lack of adequate funding. The last thing we need is a TV show that promotes bad behaviour.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was bothered by this show........I though for awhile I was turning into a crotchety old man. Ok, I AM a crotchety old man.

I know the producers love to create controversay where there is none, and I also realize that when camera's are staring yoiu in the face you may act a little differently than they normally would. However, I was more disturbed by the immaturity of the teacher. He evidently felt it was cool to be a pal to his students rather than a mentor. This show had to be an embarassment to at least the one Principal when it aired.

Like I said, I really enjoyed the first season where they filmed it in the South. Seeing the small town atmosphere where everyone in town shows up for parades and all made me long to live somewhere like that.

Here in Florida classes are overcrowded and facilities have to be almost falling down before any money gets spent on them. Supplies are so scarce that many of us frequently buy paper, pencils, etc. for our students with our own money (pretty tough sometimes on what we're paid). At my school we have a principal, two assistants and two deans. We have 80 teachers and 1400 students. Our bald-faced lying sack-of-$h!t governor pushed through a tax cut last year with a promise that he would "hold education harmless". When the revenues started to drop, guess what was the first thing to get cut? Now that Florida is in the throes of the recession (some of the worst in the nation), revenues keep dropping and the state keeps cutting education funding. Teachers & staff are being laid off, facilities closed, activities curtailed, and class sizes are growing (because of fewer teachers on the payroll). Meantime, we are expected to do the same job with more students and less resources and still maintain the same student success rate...
