Another senseless killing
Didn't start out as a bad day, but it turned into one. Jackie called me about noon to say a friend of ours, Chad, had been shot and killed this morning.... He was a Deputy Sheriff in Turner County and had been dispatched on a call to check up on a 19 year old that the caller said hadn't been seen in a couple days. When he got out of the car, the guy shot him from the house with a hunting rifle. One shot to the head, died instantly. Then the shooter drove to Sioux Falls and turned himself in.
Chad was a Deputy here for a few years, then was offered a job in Turner County, his childhood home, and took it. His wife, Jamie, has worked with Jackie for about 10 years. They have two kids, age 7 and 3. Chad was a good cop, applied the law evenly to all and was respected for it.... Then some idiot with a gun can do this..... Sometimes things just ain't right....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Pretty sad, believe it has something to say about society in general.
A couple of days ago a guy I used to work with got on the "Looney Tunes Express" and stabbed and killed his ex-wife out in the front yard of her home. He then tried to stab himself to death and failed.Ken Thomas

It is with great sadness that I read the article and the post. This young officer was cut down much to early in his life. I pray for his family as I know that they are suffering and are full of unanswered questions.
I also hope S.D. still has a death penalty on the books, because this is a case were it is fully warranted.Bob

Condolences Friend -
There's just no accounting for this type of thing. My heart is heavy for the widow and family. There are no words that can express my grief nor convey the sorrow. I pray you will feel the care and concern the folks on this site are sending your way.

In this case, the "kid" is 19 years old. We have a lot of 19 year old men and women representing this nation and bearing arms in our military. Education, family life (or lack thereof), social life, and a host of other things may be brought to bear in this instance, but age shouldn't be one of them. He's an adult in the eyes of the federal government and the local jurisdiction.
My kids (as I'm sure many of your's) have all handled firearms safely and effectively since before they were teenagers. They are all responsible adults now, carry concealed weapons permits, and would never take the life of another except in extreme situations of self defense.
This "kid" needs to be tried as an adult and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Just my 2 cents..

I don't disagree about him paying adult consequenses, but having had 6 children, 10 grandkids, and 5 great-grands...I can tell you that a person does not become fully matured on their 18th birthday. Some never do! I do however believe that life has certain conequences, and it doesn't matter "why", society will protect itself and enforce those consequences.
Nowdays, with the use of some really nasty drugs, the young man's social values of "street respect", using guns to settle disputes, and honing their young minds with video games, I am seeing some really ugly results.
Due to drugs, I have a niece in prison for the third time, and she's lost all of her kids, and I just had one of my sons die because he just had to respond, and provoke a fight, when he thought he was being "disrespected".....and that was at the age of 31! What a load of crap!
You would really really like for me to sit on that jury!Last edited by HOTRODPAINT; 03-16-2009 at 03:36 PM.

Well, thanks everyone. Prayer service tomorrow night and I'll pass along the condolances to Jamie.
The shooter was arraigned today and charged with 1st degree murder, and yes, South Dakota does still have the death penalty....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!
