Non powered toy... that I could get hurt on
I'm trying to build a type of street louge, but made unconventionally, by the same physics used in alpine skiing, also using old alpine skis as part of the design... what I'm trying to build is just a simple non powered kart, that rolls on casters, ans turns without changing the angle of the of the front castors, as parallel to the frame of the louge ( the casters won't turn )... on the snow, if you put your weight down on 1 ski, you will turn that way.. my thinking is that if I cut the skis in 1/2 and mount them up paralell to the frame on the outside, and put 2 castors on the tips, if I push up or pull down on the tip of ither, changing the weight ratio on the castor and louge itself, I will be able to get it to turn.... the project consists of 4 old alpine skis.. there decently stiff rossignol Cut skis, from the late 1990's,. I have 2 130 CM and 2 140 CM, and the main frame/ seat will be built from a Rossignol 159 Widebody snowboard, and a couple 2x4's.. rear wheels will be mounted near the tail of the snowboard, on the snowboard.. total cost is $7 for the castors ( 90# rating each, and there 2" castors ) cause I got everything else free........ any idea's? am I gonna end up hurt? You don't know what you've got til it's gone

nah.. but I do have a helmet... I really shouldn't get hurt, even if I cant steer, the test hill is not steep and only maby 100'.. if somthing were to go wrong, I won't be going fast enough to the point I couldn't stop it... I can get more skis if I need. You don't know what you've got til it's gone

but can you get more SKIN if needed?.
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

How about a wooden stick brakes that work on a simple pivot that you pull like handles to brake side to side. Would also function as steering." "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

Sounds like Hunter or Windham is having an end of season festival to me!!!
I doubt very much that weighting/unweighting and carving your turn (in what medium??) will accomplish what you want in a "timely" fashion.
Leave your computer on and 'tuned' to this forum and a note pasted to the monitor screen while you give it a try so we can be notified by someone when the Life Flight chopper leaves. If you end up in an Albany hospital, I'll come to visit.Dave W
I am now gone from this forum for now - finally have pulled the plug

If you have a helmet, you also better have boots and a full set of leathers. Ever heard of road rash?? Being a former motorcycle racer I am here to tell you asphalt hurts.Bob
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail....but a true friend will be sitting next to you saying..."Damn....that was fun!

We use to take vegetable crate and make push cart and use 26" bicycle wheels and tires no brakes and raced them down hill into a T in the road at the end of the street, up over the boards on the curb, and into the field. We would put 4 - 18" skis on them in the winter. No helmets. Early 60's.
But then again....I was 14 then, and didn't think pain hurt then.
Good Luck.....I Think you'll need it.

I work at Hunter in the rental department, so all the skis there throwing out ( they had Salomon 500 bindings which are no longer considered safe by solomon ).. we can take.. some ppl are making chairs, others, contraptions like I'm going to build
I was going to try it without the castors on the snow first ( at Hunter ).. I do know that it will work on the snow because I could flex the edges in on the front shovles of the skis, and they would turn it, just like you can turn parabolic skis, by shifting weight... but I was afraid of the fact, it may not turn on the castors with weight change, and I may need a way to angle ( as paralell to the louge ) the skis to steer... mount a solid piviot up front on them, and add a support with a steering tiller in the middle, in the back of the ski.. with some kind of support to hold the rear of the skis, that slides... I'm sure I'll end up in the news if I get torn up enough to get air lifted..You don't know what you've got til it's gone
