With apologies to all in advance, this thread is getting ridiculous. It would be nice if those detractors would stop, think about the implications and before they criticize the NSRA decision to allow newer cars, at least ATTEND a show. Look at my AVATAR to see what is my preference. Yes, it would be very nice to have that kind of attitude that pre '49 is best. IT SIMPLY WILL NOT FLY IN TODAY'S ECONOMY. There are a limited number of, 1, restorable vehicles available at an acceptable cost. 2, There are a limited number of fiberglass and steel replicas available. 3, There are a limited number of folks that can even do automobile mechanics or body work any longer. 4. There are a limited amount of discretionary income dollars in today's economy that can be funneled to personal hobbies with food, families and homes taking up most of those funds. 5, NSRA/Goodguys and others are not hobbies run for our enjoyment for those operating those groups regardless of their advertising. They are a business and if they don't show a profit - they're gone. And NSRA York - most of the really poorly done cars - they were the 1948 and older cars - I specifically spent my time looking for the later crapola cars - and they were not there!!!!!!!
Now, let's get back to that discretionary income and the spending those funds. Take a look at those attending. How many of those folks are in their 20's to 40's? Damn few!!! They just can't afford that expensive weekend trip. I'm guessing that the average age has moved from the late 40's of the 1980's to over 60 (I can tell by the numbers of electric scooters and hanging guts, gray or lack of hair and the oxygen tanks). My weekend at NSRA York cost over $450 - and I didn't have my car there and was alone for two nights. Had my wife attended, a better hotel would have been at least another $100, food another $100 and that's just for the two nights. a third or fourth night, add another $125 to $250 for a hotel and another $150 for food and gas.
Now, I haven't added the employment or should I say UNemployment. The 9.7% is downright gooberment lie!!! The real number is somewhere in the 16 to 20 percent. Don't look at CNN/ABC/CBS/NBC or even Fox, look elsewhere. This too has taken its' toll. If you don't have work, you don't have money. Your car may have been sold or possibly in the garage and under a tarp as you can't afford to register or insure your toy.
This all leads to an economic decision - how can we continue to offer this event and stay in the black.
Now with all that said - boycott these shows, and when they're gone, then you can enjoy a trip to the store, a parade or maybe even a 50 car local show where the '76 Ford LTD Station Wagon with a "custom" Rustoleum paint job shows up and is top dog.
And these - they are only a few points.Dave W

I actually like V8 vegas. I'd rather see a V8 vega than a run of the mill camaro or mustang. I just don't want to see them at a show that has a long history of being pre-49.
I've owned my fair share of street machines. In the late 80's and early 90's I had a back-halfed, big block 1970 Camaro and used to go to the Street Machine Nationals in DuQoin. I had a ball.
...and then I discovered street rods.
Since then, I have been a fairly faithful member of the street rod community. I currently go to a dozen or so shows a year, half of which are larger shows. Our family vacations are planned around the shows.
Oh yeah, I'm 41 years old and I consider myself a first generation street rodder. I actually got my dad into street rods ...not the other way around.
It has been mentioned before, building a 30 year old car is not the cheap way out. To build a late model to the same fit and finish as a street rod takes $$$.
And yes it is quite expensive to attend shows. I do it because I love pre-49 car shows.
The only Good Guys show I go to is the one in Bowling Green...because it has the Nostalgia Drag Racing. I do not go to the one in Nashville, TN (only 40 miles from my house)...because I don't care for the late model stuff.
Based on the current registrations for the NSRA Nationals, I'm not the only one that is unhappy.
Verbally expressing our opinions didn't accomplish anything.
As street rod owners, there is only one way to express our opinion in a manner that will result in change....to vote with our pocketbooks.Last edited by Flipper_1938; 06-22-2010 at 01:04 PM.

I hear you and completely understand where you're coming from wanting the cutoff at 1948. The sight of nothing but those old cars is special and it sucks that money has to be involved in these decisions. I come from a Rod/Sled family myself (I'm 45). My father loves those darn 49 Mercs and would buy every one of them on the planet if he could.Last edited by djv8ga; 06-22-2010 at 11:34 AM.

I'm with Dave W. on this one!!!! With the current economic conditions in this country, and all the other forms of family fun competing for so few dollars attendance at all the events is going to be down.
Now, if this boycott bs works (doubtful) and XX thousand pre-48's stay away, and all those "dreaded" Camaro's and Mustang's decide it's just not worth the hassle of having so many of the pre-48 crowd look down their noses at the newer stuff in attendance and they too stay away it's going to no longer be a profitable show for NSRA and they'll just go out of business... Boy, no more NSRA shows!!! Guess the boycotters showed them who's boss!!!!
So, if NSRA goes defunct I guess the Pre-48 only crowd will have their own comparable organization up and running within 6 months???? Doubt it. By then there will be so much hate and discontent the majority of folks will probably choose Disneyland for their next vacation and we'll all be back (as Dave W. mentioned) to going to the 1 day parking lot shows with 50 cars!!!! Heck, they're usually more fun anway!!!!
Be careful what you wish for!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

NSRA management f'd up, not me.
Several years ago, when coke came out with "New Coke" to be more like Pepsi, what happened?
People said "You screwed up. We want the old coke". Coke sales fell and coke went back to the making sodas with the old taste.
Same situation. A large precentage of the street rod community is saying "NSRA you screwed up. We want the old NSRA".
If the bastards don't fix it, and fly the plane into the side of a mountain....screw 'em. I'll find something else to do with my time and money. There are two things in life where penetration is really important.....and one of them is welding.

I read your post but do not buy into your argument that going to 1980 cut off is an economic necessity for the NSRA to survive. They are in fact hurting themselves and the street rod industry.
The coke example is a valid comparison. NSRA is a product provider that made changes to their product that the consumer did not want. As consumers, we have the right to choose what we want to buy or not buy.Last edited by Flipper_1938; 07-01-2010 at 09:09 PM.

I understand what some of you guys are saying, but I think the nsra f$&@ up !!! I do understand that the nsra is a buss.,BUT the nationals should have stayed pre-49. And at other shows raised the date to 1972 at the latest!!
. I agree that hotrods can be expensive, but I don't think that is the reason the 40 & younger crowd are not that large at nsra shows, these were not our first cars ( I am 40) it was late 60's early70's beater muscle cars so that's what most are drawn too.
The cost of a streetrods $$$$$ is not the issue for most 30-40 year old guys who are building a car , it cost just as much or more with 60 & 70's cars to fix up. (The guys who can't afford hotrods, are the same guys that can't afford any project cars!!!) they just don't want streetrods!!
I work construction, saved my money, learned to do everything that I possible can myself, had friends help!, built my 1939 chevy coupe myself!! Except for the interior!
The car cost $3200, & it took me six years. And being honest, I have another $22,000 in it. But I did everything to the highest standard I could afford or do, I could have cut atleat$5,000 off use less expensive items on the car. I knew that the cutoff for the the nsra was pre49 so I bought a pre49 car just so I could show at the nats. Had my car at the last 2 nationals ! If the nsra wants younger members they need to do something different not just let any car come to the nsra nats.!!!! All they have done is piss off most of there core members . If they won't atleast keep the nats pre49 I hope they do close up!!!
If they stay with the current 80 cutoff the the nsra is already dead!

Are we having fun yet? Just remember, we are supposed to be having fun.
Hey I see pikkys of US rod runs & I dont get the lawnchair thing & I dont get the cars arriving on trailers & I dont get the power parking stuff & i dont get the importance of trophies, but you guys do all of that and you have fun doing it.
The dumb thing with boycotts is that "they" are there having fun and "you" are at home having a bleat to your wife.
I think you boycotters got it wrong
And was the Louieville Nats full of 80s cars with silly 24 inch rims? And those gangster dudes?

The old saying "you can't please all the people all the time" seems to apply here."PLAN" your life like you will live to 120.
"LIVE" your life like you could die tomorrow.
