Yep, there have been many days when I ask myself what the @%$& am I doing?
Then after a brief break, I hop on here ask advice and trudge ahead! Unfortunately that doesn't extend to heaters! I just tell the wife to call the repair man! Out of my league and with us both working it's hard to get the time for the honey do list, not alone being here for a repair man to fix something.
The good part of our 1865 house is I helped build the 2006 addition from digging the trenches for the footings all the way to wiring and finish plumbing. So as long as it falls into a category I know, I'm o.k. Cooling and heating is just one of those specialty fields I've never worked in. I guess if I took a course I'd be o.k. But when it comes to the internals and problems like your experiencing....UNCLE!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

I became a furnace "expert" when I installed our replacement about 3-4 years ago. What a PITA. It's a baseboard HW furnace with 4 different zones, controls and thermostats. Bright me - I bought the same brand that was originally there - a Utica Boiler thinking that it would just be a plug in - wrong of course. They changed the water flow direction to opposite sides which meant that ALL of my plumbing, controls and zone valve arrangements had to be redone -so am also a veteran solderer and pipe fitter. Luckily it's a gas furnace and all I had to do was a minor reroute and flex pipe mod. My 2 evening job turned out to be a full week including a couple of vacation days but it turned out a lot neater then the original messy installation and a lot more efficient - like about 15-25% less gas use for actually more heat. Call a plumber/HVAC guy - nah. It will only cost 2 to 3X more for me to do the job (I also don't ask directions when I'm lost either)Dave W
I am now gone from this forum for now - finally have pulled the plug

We have heat now, that's good. When I went to motorcycle in 1975, the instructor would always start out when trouble shooting never over look the basics. Well I did I thought I had power because it was coming from the switch. The power going to the furnace had a loose wire on the neutral side.
It even got the repairman he put a transformer in first then he found the wire, he felt bad. I'm just happy to have heat even though it cost a good buck for another lesson in life. I always think it's going to be the big item so I go for that first. Even though I just put a new motor in a 2 or 3 years ago that was bad.
Thanks for all the help, and let this be a lesson on anything your working on start at the basics first.
