I am looking to get a a older truck for a daily driver. I will in the future do work to it to get it they way I like it. I know that Chevy started to use computers in their cars about 86. Is everything before that emissions exempt? This is in Texas . Thanks

Nooooo, each state has criteria for emissions inspection.....but Chevy started emissions controls in 1967 (for states other than CalEfornia) which is why a 1966 Nova is more desirable in certain states than a 1967 Nova is.

You have to research individual states to find the answer. Some states require emissions testing based upon city or county of residence...for instance, in Arizona, certain counties require emissions while others do not.

Try google.com It may have some answers.

Give your local testing station a call,or I bet they have a website.
Hear in Mo. we emission test 1996 up (OBD vehicles). But all vehicles have to have the safety inspection and the safety inspection requires that all factory installed emission devices are there and operational.

In the State of Washington, these are the hoops you'll have to jump though:

Oklahoma, no emissions testing, no safety testing.

In California, Vehicles 1975 and older are exempt. After that you have to have them inspected.

Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!
