you gotta see it to complain about it. our farm borders a railroad and county road . on the other end is a hill i own half of so they only thing that could complain would be the cows. i'll eat'em if they do. i built in the middle of the post oaks and cant see anything but trees. we're at the top of the hill country without the inflated land prices and the tree huggin yuppies . life is good in cow country. i've lived in almost every state but always came back to central texas. but living in town sucks no matter where i went.

In the southwest, Arid-zona is great, for the most part, in the lower elevations; Prescott is about 4000 feet, and does get some winter, and Flagstaff is higher, and so, colder in the wintertime. Personally, I like Tucson or that area; Phoenix is getting too "big city" for my taste - hah; look where I live. . If you like small town, and water play, Lake Havasu City is a pretty good "car" town; there are several clubs active there. Here in Las Vegas, there is a "car culture", but it seems to be sort of "underground" - it's here, but the average visitor doesn't see it; you need to get in and get involved to know it exists. In Clark County, we have smog check, but I don't find it as offensive as California's, for some reason; I haven't had any problems since I've lived here. Maybe if I had run up against the system, I wouldn't say that. That said, Las Vegas is not as wide open a town as it is made out to be; it is a big city with city problems, and a very thin commercial base, so we are going through a really rough patch right now. One advantage to that is that property is cheap as heck, but then will it ever come all the way back? Just some observations from my rocking chair.

Twistin' and bangin' on stuff for about sixty or so years; beat up and busted, but not entirely dead - yet.

I expected some response but wow what a response. Well like I said we are just starting to look. Yes i like Florida but I do not care for the extreams.

Over the next couple of years we will probally look into GA, Tenn, Alabama and maybe Texas, just a starting point.

We just want to narrow our search down to the car friendly areas.

Thanks everyone for your input, it was great.

I mentioned we lived at one time in North Carolina. Don't rule that area out. It is not as hot as we have it here in Florida, nor as cold in winter as further North. We lived in Winston-Salem and loved the area. Nice people, great schools, the aforementioned temperate climate, and in lots of areas you can get some property so you are not next door to anyone.

The deciding factor always has to be how will you make a living in an area you are considering. If that is not a factor for you, the sky is the limit. But if it is a factor it is a significant one. Oh, and you want to be sure your Spouse will like the new area too. When Mama ain't happy, nobody is happy.

Don, I'm pleased that you liked NC, but I was born and raised there and I can tell you, there are several reasons I am "FROM" NC, a long ways FROM.
Constant high humidity. Take a shower and dress. Walk outside and 20 minutes later, you look like you've been wet down with a hose from all the perspiration.
Cannot plan anything outside more than a day or two ahead. Rain.
Freezing rain in the winter. Oh, what a joy that is!
Mosquitos, mosquitos and more mosquitos. Sweat bees, sweat bees and more sweat bees. You have to be a one-handed gardener, because the other hand has to be used as a fan in front of your face to keep the bugs away.
"The South's gonna rise again" attitude of some of the "good ole boys". Ahhhhhh, JeeZ, give me a break. Tired of hearing it.
Blacks with attitude. Yep, many of them have come past the "equal" line and are on the "we're better than you" side of the line. They can get up in your face in a hurry. Had my fill of that crap too.

You can have all of NC that you want. If I never go back there, it'll be too soon.

Rod, how would you like to live in the ultimate car friendly community? They cater to car enthusiasts and welcome you with open arms. Here is a description of their 'Club House-Garage' that you can use to work on your car,

"THE CLUB HOUSE/GARAGE is a place for restorations, general maintenance, fun and fellowship. In an air-conditioned and well lit section of the main club building is the complete auto maintenance and repair facility. It includes a lift and a pit, welding and painting areas, plus other items necessary for the proper care of classic vehicles. The clubhouse social rooms have a great room with fireplace, kitchen with bar area, plus a large deck for outdoor enjoyment and entertaining."

This community is located in some of the most beautiful scenery in the US, the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Lenoir, NC.

You're right the economy has held up pretty well. Housing is a bit high in the Metroplex ,but if you get out side of Austin like Shine mentioned it's more affordable.

A lot of music and things to do in the area. As far as car shows, etc. you have Dallas,Houston, San Antonio and Austin to draw from.

I love Tenn. and would go back in a minute, but as was stated earlier if Mama ain't happy you pay the price.

I would like to suggest North Georgia. I live about 50 miles north of Atlanta. On any given weekend there are so many car show's/cruise in you get confused on where you want to go. It's not for to TN to there car stuff. Lot's of places to buy car stuff like year one, summit to name a couple. there is a web site called cruzin to the oldies that list some of the stuff going on. http://cruzintotheoldies.com/index.html
I live where the cow's use to be neighbors but now it's not completely like that. We have car shows from Mar-Oct but if you look around something year round. If we do get snow then the next day it could be 70 degrees again.
    Sorry got to rambling

    car friendly retirement area

If you still want to stay in FL, check out the other coast, we live in Melbourne, and I have had numerous mustangs sitting in my back yard, and at this time I have an original 71 Mustang Funny car body sitting in the back yard, with a 4 foot fence that all can see the body, even with its for sale sign on it (know of anyone looking for one?), and not one person has ever complained.

Now if I could retire somewhere else I would look at the Lake Haveseu area, or Phoenix, as they are in AZ, and within 5 hours of most of the central/southern car shows in CA. You could hit everything from the grand national roadster show, to the Monterey historics, Bakersfield nostalgic drags, and even the Fresno autorama. You are retired, soooo make a 4 day weekend at going to some of these shows. Being in AZ you won't have to deal with CAs taxes, or laws, and still be close enough to enjoy their car events.
