Thanks for the concern kind people. I even rung my X wife to see if she was all right, She lives in Christchurch now. On our local Hotrod Site there is mention of quite abit of damage at Craig Stares place with one car shaken off it's axle stands, his '32 moving across into his '27 T coupe resulting in damage so all is not well down there. The earthquake was only 30 kms inland from ChCh at only 12 km's deep so there will be a heck of alot of damage I would think. All those affected will be in my prayers...I maybe a little crazy but it stops me going insane.

HotrodTodd is in New Plymouth at the moment,so he missed it,but his wife and kids are all okay,he couldnt get home if he wanted to,cos the airport is closed till later in the day..Another bud and his family are squatting at his friends house for a while because they have no power,One of our ex local identities,Malcolm Rowse[I think Blow by should remember him] has been helping his son and family clean up,while Malcs 34 pickup has rocked off its axle stands too,and is resting on its front wheels, which he conveniently put under the running boards, out of the way..
Unfortunately, thing thing that has really burned me off, is something that VERY rarely happens down her...They have had a LOOTING problem,so I hope the police and the Army can get in to the city centre and stop this from happening..

See if that works..

Guys, Im from Christchurch, and its a major.
please send drums of nitro and as many old Hemis as you can get your hands on. If you cant find then, then send superchargers and Hilborn injections.
Im out of town so only heard about it when my wife rang me this morning. Nobodys been killed and the injuries, in the main, are pretty light. We were fortunate that it happens at 4.35am when most are home in bed.
The looters apparently turned out to be some people who took their chances and broke into a liquor store. But they are warming the pine at the local police cells now. Theres an army base about 20 miles from the city & they can supply all manner of stuff as its needed.
Most of the property damage is from brick buildings that lost walls, and from stuff flying around in houses. The sewerage, water, power and roading have taken a big hit. Te airport was closed for about 6 hours but its okay.
I will get home by about midweek to see how things are, but my take is that most people are okay, but a bit nervy (for good reason).
Apparently, 90% of houses should have their power back on by tonight which is good as its winter and cold down there. Some time back, open fires were banned for smog reasons and heatpumps dont work without electricity.
I would rather have some smog, than freeze to death.

Thanks for the concern,people...the other[semi]regulars on here live a lot further north from me,although a guy we know from about 40 miles south of me reckoned he felt it...but it coulda been one of his kids jumping on the bed...
Toddy,I gotta pic of a hemi somewhere..will that do?And ill give ya a gallon of two stroke mower fuel, but ya gotta come and get it...
Actually,it sounds like poor ol Craig Stare suffered some real damage..Cars falling on others,or leaning on others...Micah 6:8

Will only settle for the pikky if its a blown Hemi Robin.
Bullletz took a hit at his place - think he lost a chimney, and the university (in the same block as our house) is closed for a week with damage.
We are very thankful that we got off really light compared to many.
I will probably work a long day tomorrow & head home on monday. Got some work to do about 90 minutes south of here on monday then it will be the dash to the ferry. And cruise down the south island.
As an aside, I wonder who the bright dude was who looked at the map and said "wow, wonder what we can call these two big islands? - I know, lets call the northern one North Island and I wonder what we can call the southern one? Lets brainstorm - hey, what about South Island?"

Heck - at least you know about North and South Island - most of us here only have a vague idea as to where NZ really is in comparison to say - Miami.
I'm glad that there wasn't any more problems then some physical damage and some inconvenience (heat, lights, etc). It's really too bad that some folks cars got damaged, but at least there was no one underneath and injured and the cars can be fixed. It will just take some time.Dave W

I wasn't near any radio or TV yesterday, so this is the first I have heard about this. Hope you are all ok down there. Mother Nature can be tough some times.

Early reports didn't say how bad this was, but the local Christchurch NZ Herald paper shows how much damage there is: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/ar...ectid=10671049
and the Australian paper:

Todd, lets face it...Te Ika a Maui[the fish of Maui],and Te Wai Pounamu[the waters of greenstone,S.Is]are hardly the names we want to be calling our islands,,besides, half of our ''indigenous''probably cant even get their mouths around it...North Island and South Island will do the job...Micah 6:8
