what's a fair price for my Beetle?
Most of you probably don't know that I totaled my daily driver 4x4 pickup in an accident on Sept 4th when I hit a telephone pole.. but I did, and both my passanger and I walked away, and were/ are fine.... this has kinda put me in a pickle because the Beetle, is all I have now, and is what I'm driving daily.. but it's cold, windy days blow it over the road like a kite, and it has been quiet windy lately... I couldn't make the winter with it where I live, and wouldn't want to anyway... it is a fun car to drive and gets attention wherever it goes ( very presentable ). but right now it's not practical and I have no money to go out and buy another DD..
It's a 1974 Super Beetle Wolfsburg with the Autostick.. floors should be replaced. I have the drivers floor pan from wolfsburg west, and it would be replaced except the seats were swapped ( german seats, but unknown brand, they Look VW to me ) and they built goofy seat risers that are welded into the original tracks. they are solid and they work, but there bulky. and so I never cut the pan out .. so w/o mods, it needs 2 '73+ Beetle seats.. floors have been temp repaired solid and there ok for a daily driver, but correctly, it would have the right seats and new pans... also just did a brake job, had some wiring done due to an inop light... full tuneup has it running good, and it's a car I don't worry about really... $100 stereo system ( speakers are cheap VR3 6x9's in box's in the rear storage area, and the Head unit is a cheap Pyle AM/FM/MP3 unit.. but it sounds ok... I paid $1,500 for it, and need to get at least that out of it, being my time and it's now a drivable car that's state inspected for the next year... My boss is pretty much begging me to sell it ( which I havn't given him a yes or no, being the title isn't back right yet ).. he said he's finding them for $2,500 for 1's that are as nice or a little nicer than mine, but others for a lot more also, and slim pickings ... I don't think I will ask $2,500. but I was thinking $2,000- $2,200 somewhere in there was a fair price. letting everything I have go with it that I bought for it.... I found another '74 Super, that had the correct seats, but isn't on the road and is showing 1/4 vent rust ( mine does not have 1/4 vent rust ). they want $3,900 for it and it says needs brake work and that it runs... is $2,200 a fair price?
I'll pick up a pre -68 next year, or possibly a Corvair dependingYou don't know what you've got til it's gone

Not sure of the exact value Matt, but two things are against you.........Super Beetle and Autostick. The Super Beetles just never had the following that the regular Beetle did, and most people shun those automatics. Hope you do well selling it though.
I hadn't heard about your wreck. Sorry that happened but glad you were ok.

yea, my boss knows it's an Autostick superbeetle.. I don't think he cares, because he just wants a Beetle to fix up with his son and finding them in are area is hard... The Autostick works like a charm..
as for my wreck. I was taking a friend of mine to go see a friend of hers in a town a few hours away. and it was early in the morning, and the windshield on the truck was dirty, and the sun glared going into a corner to the point I couldn't see around the corner, and I nailed the telephone pole.. airbags deployed, it pushed the frame off to the driver side, but aside from a few seconds of being in a slight daze, we exited the truck with little issue.. her door was stuck a little so I had to pry it openYou don't know what you've got til it's gone

Matt, check out the classifieds on The Samba.com
It's the largest site for VW's. It will give you a good idea of what's available and buy/sell pricing range.
Good luck.

just checked thru 3 pages of cars in the '68- up type 1 catagory, and it seems that '73- '74 supers in or around the condition of mine are going for $2k-2,500 so if I ask the $2,200, I think that's a fair price.. and that's just about what I have in itYou don't know what you've got til it's gone

That autostick is gonna hurt you as far as resale, as someone has already mentioned.
In fact, it's a common swap to convert the autostick over to 4 speed manual, and a lot of the autostick cars actually have the clutch cable tube running the length of the trans tunnel, from the factory...find the pedal assembly, clutch hardware, flywheel for the engine, and it's relatively straightforward swap.
Look at the price on the Samba for the autostick cars vs. 4 speed cars, and same year Super Beetles vs regular, torsion bar front end, Beetles.....

yea, I know. it does have the clutch tube, and I'v looked up all that is involved... but I'm not going to go thru the trouble of swapping it over.. the AS is in perfect working order, and tomorrow on my way to work, it will pass 1k trouble free miles as a daily driver, and it will roll over 50,000 miles then too.. 49,974 miles on it as of tonightYou don't know what you've got til it's gone

This is probably NOT a very good comp
but my Bro-in-Law has a cherry 1971 VW Super Beetle Convertible for sale.
It was appraised at $8,500 before he had it painted yellow, new wheels, new carpet, new door panels.
He is asking $6,750 & it has 50,850 miles..

yea, that wouldn't be the best comparison.. does show that there not the best for investment tho... I think oval and split windows are the only 1's that really demand a lot of money..
I really like my car. it runs good, drives good and is dead reliable.. I could easily restore it for less than $2k and have a $4k investment in a pretty much brand new car.. but I'm kinda stuck now, and unless I find a real beater car for cheap, I can't keep it past novemberYou don't know what you've got til it's gone

Sounds like a sound little DD so all you need to find is the right market place and, of course, a buyer.
