Every time I think about moving from the city to the country, this is the kind of story that changes my mind. I'm fine with spiders, but cannot tolerate a snake.

Now, I understand that in Australia and perhaps New Zealand as well, you blokes have Funnel Web spiders that are fatal and will attack, so I might have to re-think spiders also.

I have just done a goggle search on the funnel web spider and it looks like Australia is now off my bucket list of places I would like to visit. I honestly don't thing we have anythig here in NZ that would kill you like gators, snakes or spiders like you fellas have.
I maybe a little crazy but it stops me going insane.

Hee-hee!!! I love snake stories. I think I might have a hard time with "moccasins", though. I've been around snattlerakes, buzzworms, rattlers all my life, and never seen one try to get into or on my bike, truck, or whatever, like Don says about those mocs - yeah, that's just NUTS; that would get exciting in a hurry.

Whip, no need to put off your trip, they won't chase you down and eat you, just make your heart race a wee bit, if, and that is a long if, you come into contact with one. There are probably some boys down in Texas who'd even take you out hunting those big Texas rattlers; they have several roundups down there each year, or at least, they used to - the PETA people might have put a stop to them, for all I know.

And, regarding Australia: they have what may be the worlds deadliest snake there, a Brown Adder, or some such thing - and I hear that they can be quite aggresive, too.

All we have in New Zealand is a charming little spider called a Katipo..Not that easy to find,it is venomous, but its only the female ya got to worry about, and only certain times of the year...
There are a few other spiders that are quite large, the wolf,up to about 2 inches across the legs,,the Avondale, which,if any of you saw the movie,Arachnaphobia, you saw them..those big pale suckers are them...just big,not dangerous,,just scare the whoopsies outta you..They are only in Auckland,still,hopefully..
No snakes..thankfully,they dont do it for me either..although they look kool as boots..
