electrical to manual fuel pump
my son charlie needs to change his electrical fuel pump to manual. it is in a 1986 camaro z28. what does he need to do this. we have the manual fuel pump. the engine is a 71 350. thanks guys.BARB

yes hoss. i have all the above. just do not know what i need at the tank and how to do it. guess i did not give enough information in my question. sorry guys.BARB

Wouldn't Barb need a sending unit for the tank since it was an electric pump because of the year of the Camaro? I have the sending unit out of my 67 Nova and know it was different then the electric pump in an 85 T-Bird.

Oh yeah, didn't catch the year on the tank!!! You'd be best to lose the in-tank pump. My choice would be to get rid of the return line and the vapor canister and use a vented fill cap on the tank, too.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Barb, I believe the motor that came in the car was throttle body injection, is that correct? Are you changing over to a mechanical pump because you now want to run a carburetor and the in-tank pump produces too much pressure for the carburetor? If this is the case, have you thought about using a regulator with the in-tank pump to bring pressure down from the 12-15 required by the TBI to the 5-6 psi required for a carburetor? You could keep the entire system in place and just add a regulator, I think.

P.S. Most mechanical fuel pumps will produce excessive pressure anyway. If you run too much pressure to the bowl, the pressure will overpower the needle and seat and blow raw gasoline into the intake manifold, presenting a tuning nightmare. Here is one that produces the proper pressure so that you don't have to use a regulator....

tech charlie has installed my 350 out of the monte into his z28. we have bypassed the sensor for the oil pump to cut off the fuel but we can not get the fuel pump to run without wiring it to the ignition directly. so what he wants to do now is go back to the manual pump. when we were using the electric pump we had a fuel regulator on it. he needs to know what he has to do to the tank to run the manual pump.BARB

If you have it working with it wired to any power thats on when the key is on, and your using the regulator, why change it if it works?
She had TPI, not TBI. It held about 55 lbs pressure, pump puts out more than that.
Or you could just remove the sender/pump Assembly and remove the pump and replace it with hard fuel line the same length as with the pump, It's only held on with rubber hose & clamps. Cap off the return line or keep using it. Convert the canister line to be your vent line.
Or cap off canister line and replace the gas cap with a vented one. Some times doing that can make the gas spray out when filling the tank.

thanks pat. charlie was concerned that if there was a accident the fuel would keep pumping until the key was turned off. that is why he wanted to change it.BARB
