    Some guys burn me up!!!

This guy that calls himself my Dad's freind wrote a book then talked bad about my Dad in it, unbelievable. My Dad was probably one of the best sport handicapper's in the world. From the early 60's till the mid 80's when he died he made the race and sport book lines for the Casino's in Las Vegas. Jimmy the Greek used to call my Dad every morning and compare lines with him to see if he was close. Anyway this guy say my Dad stiffed some other gambler he knew.
Well that's BS. my Dad didn't always tell everyone his busness and what was going on, It's just not smart. My Dad always paid his bets off.
These Guys would call up make 5 bets on differant games, lose 4 of them and win one then want my Dad to pay for the one game they won and want him to waite to get paid so they could pay other people bets they had lost to them.
If this guy was such a good freind he should have know that, Right.
You didn't get the good rep my Dad had by cheating people, besides he didn't have to' he was just that good. Plue this guy could not even spell his last name right, come on it's only 4 letters. Ray Vara is my Dad's name and he spelled Vara, Vera instead. The name of the book is We Were Wise Guys And Didn't Even Know It. The part about my Dad is on page 30 and then he talks about him though out the book. Just little parts here and there.
there is one funny part about how my Dad went after this guy in his PJ's
and the guy was trying to tell my Dad he could not treat him like that because he was running for President of the US. HE! HE! this is just a example of the nuts my Dad had to deal with some times. The writter should have known this. Funny how he waites till some one is dead before he writes about it.

Yeah, the sad thing is that once in print there's not much that can be done to really "fix" the mis-information. Even if you forced the guy to retract the statement the books are still out there

"Some guys burn me up!!! "

Yup. it's pretty sad it's almost like they WANT you to look at them as idiots. (as if they actually need to prove it all the time). must be genetic or something.

Same here but then anyone who know my Pop knew he was a good guy & opened his house to just about everyone.
My pop told me of the story of his own dad having to pay off his business loan twice(early 1930's).
It seems the banker of the town kept 2 books.
When he left town you can guess which books stayed.
G-pa went in to pay it off & the bank told him the loan was barely paid on.
My pop was a hot head back then and was going to go to Texas where the banker (now a Judge) and kill the SOB .
Thankfully my Pop was talked out of it, but sadly nothing could be done about his dads business loan other then pay it off for the 2nd time.

Thats too bad Don there are alot of con-artist out there too.
My Dad was a great guy he used to take all the neiborhood kids out on our house boat on Lake Mead on the week ends. Lots of good times out there fishing, swimmng and exploring differant areas around Lake Mead which was on the south side of Hoover Dam or the Colorado river. All the kids in the neiborhood loved him because if a couple kids stopped by to see if my brother or I could come out and we were eating he would tell them to come in and have a seat. Then he would tell them to call their parents and ask if they could stay for dinner. Then he would tell my mom to order a couple extra pizza's we have company. Every year at Thanksgiving we had half the neiborhood over watching the foot ball games. then he would have about three table's of food set up were everyone could help themselves to what ever they wanted to eat or drink.
That was alway's my Dad's day Thanksgiving That's what I remember the best.
Then he died November 18th and we had viewing the day before Thanksgiving and buried the day after. I didn't think about it till a couple of years after he was gone but,
I guess he wanted one last Thanksgiving day party. That was his day and rightly so because he enjoyed food, family and good freinds. Not to mention a good knock down drag out football game.

Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you are an idiot than to open it (or write a book) and remove all doubt.
