Although a bit before my time, I was not yet 2 when they passed, I do enjoy their music. Buddy was way ahead of his time in the way he recorded. And I really wish Richie had not been taken so early, as there is not alot recorded, but I really like what there is. I'll go crank em up right now..........
A bit of trivia........... the fellow who gave up his seat on the plane for Richie was Waylon Jennings..........

First of all thanks for posting this Gasser - - -
today is kind of a bitter sweet one for me
because my first born grandaughter has a
birthday today. However, I was a Senior in H.S.
when they died that fateful night and I remember
it all too well. Before getting popular Jape had a
Teen Radio Dance Show out of a Station in the
Beaumont Area and on a good reception day
we would tune in and sometimes throw open
the car doors and dance in the parking lot.
I have lots of memorabilia and stuf - - -
some is framed and hanging in my shop over
looking my '55 and keeping the Elvis stuff company
and some of it is still in my computer waiting for me
to print frame and display.
Take notice of 'ol Waylon in a couple of these pics.
I'll bet he carried the memory of that coin toss
to his way too early grave.
Anyhow, here is a little of that stuff from 2-3-59
that I would like to share with Y'all.

Funny how you remember some events above all others. I was 14 and had a small blue transistor radio with an earphone on it and heard the news of their death on that. Our local radio station played all of their songs non stop for something like a day to memorialize them. Things happening like this now aren't such a big dea, we've become desensitized it seems, but back then it was like personal friends had passed away.
Thanks for the reminder and the links.

Exactly, Don, and it was that way when Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkin's plane went down too..

Yep, and the halls at school were very somber and sad. Things were just a little more gentle back then...........today it's just another one bit the dust.

I was 11 at the time, and always had my transistor radio playing in my pocket! I remember hearing about it, and was really bothered by the tragedy of it.
When the song "American Pie" came out, I remember listening to it in the garage, while I was building a '62 Vette. It was one of those times when a song is moving enough that you remember where you were. Sad times. :-(

Went over to youtube and found this one with Waylon and some other pickers from Buddy's past. I've been managing to hold back the tears until I watched this but I'm glad that I did. I might have been missing 'ol Waylon also.

I was 15 and a Sophmore in high school and it was about 7:30 or so in the morning when the news came over the radio. The rest if the day was kind of somber. The you tube clip was great and I've always been a little prejudiced concerning the last tune played, hence NoT FaDe AwaY.Ken Thomas

That day is one of those in my life that is always just below the surface of my memory, and easily brought to the top. It was a somber day, as Don said; I came out of my first period class into a hallway of crying and weeping, girls on the floor, my athlete peers with tears running down their cheeks. When I found out what had happened, I felt like I'd been hit with a hammer: my whole body just went numb. It was a beautiful, crisp, sunny Mojave Desert winter day, and in my memory, it is as gray as any stormy day I've ever lived through.
In '04, we were in Minnesota, and took a day trip to Clearlake, Iowa and visited the Surf Ballroom. The feeling we had while there was perhaps best described as subdued, or somehow reverent. If you get the chance to do that, I'd highly recommend it. We then drove out to the field where the crash occurred, but neither of us had the heart to walk the half mile through the corn to the site. There is supposed to be a memorial out there, but the farmer did not provide open access to it; if you wanted to walk and find it, they wouldn't stop you, but they didn't make it readily accessible.
Thanks for the memories, Gents.Rrumbler, Aka: Hey you, "Old School", Hairy, and other unsavory monickers.
