I have a dayton 12 ton cherry picker. It has a problem lifting. I do not have any load on it right now but it does not want to go up. I pump the handle and it goes up once but will not go if i pump it again. If i wait 30 minutes or so it will go up one more time then i have to wait again. I put my shoulder under it and got the pump cock eyed and it worked fine. But when i put it back into the base it acts up again. does it need fluid and if so where do i put it in? thanks guys.

Barb, on my smaller 2T HF picker I learned that I need to let the boom/cylinder all the way down before attempting to raise it past the mid point, especially loaded. Mine has a rubber plug ~6" from the top of the cylinder, and the instructions say 1) Lower ram to minimum position, 2) remove plug, top off with hydraulic fluid, 3) raise ram to maximum height, 4) loosen release valve and push the ram to the bottom position, 5) top off fluid as necessary and replace plug. I think these are pretty standard instructions for cylinder bleeding.

You may want to check your oil level. make sure the valve is closed all the way.

Sounds like it's low on fluid. Some where about 1/2 way up on the cylinder should either be a pressed in rubber plug or a screw/small bolt. Remove that and with the cylinder compressed pour jack fluid in there. After you put a little fluid in and try pumping it and see if the cylinder goes up. Keep putting a little fluid in at a time and pumping until the Cylinder is fully extended. Replace the plug and let the cylinder down. Then cycle it a few time.

If it doesn't jack up after you have put fluid in chances are the internal seal(s) are bad.
