1989 isuzu trooper problem.
my hubbys trooper's clutch went. it is a 4x4 5 speed. a local garage quoted him a price of 2,000 to fix it. I think that the price is a little high. It is not a job that i want to do. The garage wants to replace the tranny as they said that it goes with the clutch. What is a good price to fix it? thanks guys.BARB

I would not let the shop replace the trans with the clutch. the engine is more apt to going out of 1 of those before the trans.. is it the GM, Izuzu or Honda engine? You don't know what you've got til it's gone

Being a 22+ year old vehicle, I wondering how many miles do Y'all have on this 4X4, Barb, and were many of them done off road?.

Barb, it might seem like that to you until you sit down and put pencil to paper and figure out the actual cost. You've already taken the depreciation hit on this vehicle. Now, you're considering taking another huge hit on another vehicle, plus sales tax and tags, etc. If you're thinking buying a used vehicle, you may just be swapping one set of problems for another set. You cannot trust anyone to tell you the truth. Period.
Anything with wheels and tires is the worst possible investment you can make, unless of course, we're talking a classic that still has room to run when (if) the economy comes back. But if we're talking a daily driver, run what you have until it won't run any more is my best advice. All costs considered, that will be the cheapest route to owning a daily driver motor vehicle.
When I sold Toyotas, I would see people come in and trade for a new or newer car/truck and just dig themselves deeper and deeper into debt. It really made me ill, but of course there was nothing I could do about it. It was how I made my living. What I really wanted to do was stand up and yell at them "RUN FORREST, RUN!!.
I was just thinking what I would do if I were faced with your problem. I think I would type up a half-sheet of paper, so I could make two copies on a standard sheet and say something like this.....
LOCAL MOM NEEDS HELP
CLUTCH JOB, '89 ISUZU TROOPER 4X4 5-SPEED
PAYS CASH MONEY....Finder's fee paid to you if you locate a certified mechanic to do the job.
PLEASE CALL BARBARA, 000-000-0000
Starting Monday morning, I would be placing these notices under the windshield wipers of all cars and trucks on the street surrounding dealerships. Do not step foot onto any dealership property, just work the vehicles that are parked on a public street. I wouldn't necessarily start at the Isuzu dealership, that might make some hard feelings for sure, but start with the other make of cars such as Chevrolet, Mazda, Dodge, Nissan, etc. Often, these mechanics run in cliques and unless I miss my guess, word will get back to a certified mechanic who has a shop at his home.
Just spend a couple of hours doing this on Monday morning and I suspect that by Monday evening, you will have found your hero. If not, pick another section of town and go again Tuesday morning.
Barb, I'm not known for my conventional thinking and this may seem somewhat unorthodox to you, but it's likely how I would do it if I were in your place.Last edited by techinspector1; 03-05-2011 at 03:42 PM.

Pretty good advice,really,Barb..Tech has nailed it..There is always a younger mechanic out there with a young family who needs to do a few homers to make ends meet..I used to do a lot of after hours jobs to bring the extra bux in so we were a little more''comfortable'' at home..
We have our every day runner, that my wife goes to work in,and it has been regularly serviced,[I do a bit myself]It has now done 368000kms..and I wont replace it till it DIES...hopefully at about 550000kms.. [Its a 1995 Ford Telstar SW[2litre/5speed],]Those older Jappers are usually bullet proof, driven correctly..Throw a clutch in it,Barb, and tell that other guy about his lack of parentage...Micah 6:8

thanks guys for the advice. he heard of a local guy today that does really good work for a reasonable price. he is going to call him monday. The reason that i do not want to do the job is that i am getting really close to finishing the monte and have thrown all my time and effort into that. I have tried to replace a clutch on these once before with a owner. the owner gave up as he could not get to the bolts to drop the tranny. so he sold it. The trooper has alot of miles but we do not know how many of them are off road as we are the 3rd owner. But hubby loves it and i understand that as i am that way about my car.BARB

got a very reliable local shop to take a look at it. it is the tranny that is bad and not the clutch. do not know right now what the price is going to be to replace it. doing research there are a couple of sites that say that the tranny for the trooper is the same as the 5 speed for the 89 s-10. is that true? are they interchangeable? also can i get the trooper home and rebuild the tranny? thanks guys. The engine is a 2.8 liter v6.BARB

Barb,That year Trooper, with the GM engine shares many of the same parts as a Jimmy/Blazer,so you shouldn't have any problem.
