Thread: Got a Delta Drill Press

Today I spied an add for a floor standing Delta drill press. It's a 3/4 hp 16 1/2" drill press. The guy wouldn't give me a price over the phone, so I went down to the warehouse that was liquidating it's assets to check it out. I figured in good shape it was worth $150 tops for me, since I like Delta tools, but could get a new one for around $350. It turned out this one was broken at the extension table bracket and the rack piece that the bracket rides to go up and down. Everything else looked great, except for some old tape scum on the plastic parts. So I figured the parts would go for around 75-100 bucks to replace, and offered him 60. He said how about 75, I said, that a good used one was only worth 175 tops, so, I'd be into it more than I could sell it. He sold it for 60! Drill works great, parts came to 87bucks shipped, so all in all I'm pretty pleased!

Steve, I have exactly that same Delta and have had it for probably 20 years or more. Last year I bought a new Craftsman drill press but we end up using the old Delta more than the new one.

Got some of the new parts in the mail today. They didn't send the gear rack, but I straightened the bent one and used it for now. The press cleaned up nicely, I'm very pleased with this one!

Nice press, had one of those a few years back, and my mount broke too, a neighbor was over using it to drill a few holes and didn't tighten the back tension bolt after he lowered the table. The spindle will provide a lot of down pressure and it's not uncommon to break there.

I have a bench version that looks identical to that Delta which came from the "old" Harbor Freight about 1995 and has a Central Tool tag on it. It works great, but the two belts leave a bit to be desired. I upgraded my chuck to a JET as the POS supplied had about .030+ run out. I just moved mine to a new bench - it IS heavy for one person to lift !!

That casting on the back on mine hasn't cracked - yet - but it sure does look like the weak part on it and the fact that you were able to get parts does make me happy.
