Sunday Project, my Granddads Forge
It’s not really auto related (although I do occasionally use the lead hammer molds to make soft hammers) but I did have a good morning working with my Grandson.
I had brought my Granddads forge and tools back from IL many years ago knowing that I was the only one who would eventually do anything with it. It’s a Champion Blower and Forge 147, with a 22” cast iron pan. I am told Granddad used it on the farm for shoeing the horses until they started using tractors in the 30s. I decided this would be a good weekend to clean it up and put it back together. I got it apart yesterday and sandblasted and painted.
It was really in pretty good shape, everything there, no cracked castings or burn thru, the blower gears are in great shape and it works smoothly.
Anyway we got it put together….. I don’t know what he had more fun doing putting it together or cranking the blower.

Actually I do have some down the road plans for it, besides the lead hammer molds I have a couple of aluminum knife handle molds. I want my helper to get just a little bit bigger first.I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

Nice to see one with all of the parts and pieces. Beautiful project, and one the Kid will remember all of his life, believe me.
Now, let's see; I've got one of those blowers around here somewhere.Rrumbler, Aka: Hey you, "Old School", Hairy, and other unsavory monickers.

I can relate to the joy you find with your grandson. I had one of mine come over for a weekend about a year ago. He was a little older than your assistant, and wanted to custom paint his bicycle. I spent the weekend showing him how, and made him spray it himself, in a two color blue fade job. He did better than I did the first time! :-) The next weekend we put it together.
Great fun, Huh!

Mike I salute you . We all have things we have inherited or picked up from a friend or relative. My list is long of things that need restoring. I just can't get on with it. I'm getting slower as age creeps in.
Oh well I enjoy looking at them any way even though they are a bit rusty. You are the lucky one to have grand kids that show an interest in granpa's collection.
Me I don't expect any grandkids as my three children are all single and in their 40's and 50's.Don D
