We got rid of Sky, we worked out it was costing us around $1500 per year, and we can buy a lot of dvds for that, so we went 'Free to Air', its got Coronation St, and now search the 'Under $10' bins at The Warehouse for the good dvds.
As stovens says; The Last of the Summer Wine is one of many great series, and for under $10 we get four nights of watching pleasure.
We got basic package, sports channel for motorsport,,,no movie package, cos,as you say, costs too much..

Sounds like you folks there in the really deep South have the same problem we have - you can't pick and choose what you really want to watch. For me to get SPEED Channel, I need to subscribe to the "sports tier" which includes golf, tennis, basketball, rasslin' and hockey - none of which I want nor will watch.

We have been borrowing DVD series from our excellent library. We are up to date on MI5, Bones through season 4, 24, Monarch of the Glen and now we are watching the Mentalist. The @#$%ing commercials drive me to drink on most programs so after watching a couple of DVD episodes, off to either read or wander the internet for a couple hours before bed - and then we can start all over

Yeah,Dave,,we get three sports channels, which are full of football, rugby, anything else that resembles sport,,,and the motorsport,,NASCAR,,WRC,local events,,highlites,,etc,,plus we have ESPN,,which has a lot of dragracing, tractor pulls,etc..which is all I really want to watch,sportwise..
We got lotsa DVDs we havent seen yet,,and haunt the cheap bins, scouring for all the old car related movies we can find..then they usually sit around for several weeks till we get a chance to watch them...

Dave you are scaring me, I'm doing the same series on Netflix. Monarch of the Glen was one of our favorites. You might try McClouds Daughters.

Steve - we will still watch an episode of Monarch if it comes on PBS. I even took pictures of the estate from across the lake a few years ago when we were in Scotland.

I agree with Stovens, while some of the plots seem made up, I enjoy the pickers show and the guys seem friendly. I feel like I learn a bit about some of the items they find (or are planted there depending at how you look at it).
If you look at it for entertainment value it seems to deliver.

Pops, did not know that about Barry Weiss. Cool fact I had no clue on.

I think most people want to spend lots of money betting they'll hit it big like on t.v., making most auctions not worth what you'll end up with, but 700 on Edsel parts sounds worth it if you have the time and energy to store, catalog and list all that stuff. I like the cookoo clock you scored on that one unit last year Don! I guess the risk and potential can make it fun sort of like gambling!

Is the cookoo still cookoo ing, Steve? I always hate to sell stuff to friends.

I would have had to become an Edsel expert if I bought that unit. Edsel had various years and various models so you would have to know what chrome piece went where on what one. The unit was so full there was a little path down the middle and that was it, the sides were jammed with every part imaginable. I wish now I had done it.

clock is working great. I had a crazy uncle who decided in the 60's Edsels would be worth a fortune, he invested in 7 brand spankin new ones, had them parked up and down his street. Kept getting parking tickets, until he finally sold them for pennies on the dollar. Did the same thing with lionel railroad cars and engines, had them everywhere. The funny thing, is they all did go way up, he was just not there for the payoff.

the Wife is a big fan but I am not and mainly because it's scripted and produced and that, in it'self, turns me off on a show of this nature

I have a good friend that his parents and grand parents own some old businesses in the town of Grundy Center. Before the pickers had their show, they came to my friend Mike's family businesses and tried to buy a lot of stuff. It wasn't a pleasant experience for the store owners. They ran them out of there. That's all I can say about them, I've never met them before. They do find some unique stuff, and see a lot of old junk. It would be a cool way to make a living though!

Mike, I didn't notice the first time post. Hope that Rich isn't overly offended with us pointing out the error in names.

Sometimes we just want to talk, not necessarily say anything, just not be alone.
