This is the primary reason we aren't taking our cars to out of town events anymore, and why we don't stay in hotels if we do. It is happening with such regularity you just can't take the chance.
And, if caught, the thieves get NOTHING ! There was a TV show last week where a police dept in Miami and an investigative journalist rigged a Blazer with audio and video equipment and an undercover cop posed as a guy trying to have his car "stolen" for insurance fraud purposes. He went to a local towing company and the owner of the place charged him $ 500 to make the car go away.
They filmed the whole transaction and the subsequent dismantling of the car, even with the employees bragging about how many cars they steal and how they were two time losers and couldn't get caught again. They even filmed them using the Blazer to steal some towing equipment off of a competitors truck the night before they stripped it. The cops swooped in, arrested them all, and they got ZIP, NADA, ZERO ! All they could get them on was receiving stolen property for which all of them got probation !
That is why these lowlifes continue to take cars without too much worry.

@ cffisher I worked at chev. dealership about ten years ago and we had a Camaro stolen from the make ready line. The car was washed and ready for delivery. The guys that had washed it left the keys in it, it came back about two weeks later. (nothing but a hull ,no engine ,no trans ,no interior, no lights, nothing). @Gary I was thinking the same thing.Sometime Kool is the Rule But Bad is Bad

all the money for a tow rig plus the value of the car and no alarm ??? we hear this all the time. i would have the top of the line dis-abler system on one.

Charlie, you never know, seems like every 6 months or so you hear stories like this of a long lost car being recovered.
I'm thinking the same thing Gary. I feel sorry for the guy. As I understand the story, the car was up for sale again on E Bay and the owner recognized some of his handy work under the hood from before it got stolen. The police were able to identify the car by a hidden VIN.I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

Here is what I am using: ARROWTRACK FROM ECLIPSE
When your car moves, the unit sends you a text message. The message can go to your phone or to your computer. You can also query the unit as to its location. This thing is much better than Lojack since you know the instant that something happens.....not the next morning when you go out and find the car missing. With Lojack, the cops do the tracking, with Arrowtrack, you can track it or give the cops the link to your unit. Down side is the service is $125 per year and some folks think that is too much to pay to keep their car from being stolen.

I like the idea that you can track it yourself .. Because sometimes just getting your car back
isn't enough !! Trunk Monkey - YouTube

The trunk monkey is the ultimate! Like the concept of the arrowtrack system. For a 30k car, 125.00 a year is a small insurance price!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.
Thank you Roger. .
